Anyone else watching this?
One down, nine to go.
There were some very emotional scenes in this episode. At lest I teared up a few times. When Eugene was told he couldn't serve and the Japanese soldier scene both got to me.
Oh and for the record this series, like Band of Brothers, is based on real stories of real soldiers and yes they have consulted those men a great deal for the series.

From the ashes, a fire shall be woken. A light from the shadow shall spring. Renewed shall be blade that was broken. The crownless again shall be king.

Well, not directly. John Basilone was killed on Iwo Jima. Robert Leckie and Eugene Sledge both wrote excellent memoirs which are the basis of much of the series, but both died in 2001. The producers and writers, however, did interview many other Marine veterans.and yes they have consulted those men a great deal for the series.
It's just one episode down, but I didn't think this one had the dramatic arc that characterised BoB episodes, especially the way the Toccoa and England training narrative was framed by the June 4 stand-down and the actual launch on June 5.
