The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No. I can't explain the ma'am at all. The best I can say is that the speaker's current activity is usually associated with women in European paintings.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Is it from LOTR?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Is it Aragorn?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No. The speaker is, however, at a location that also contains Aragorn. And at least one named female, although that is unrelated to the ma'am.

Just out of curiosity, I ran it through TranslationParty again, and all it said was:
Last 1 day.
Here's the new quote:
Last 1 day.
Here's the new quote:
They are not allowed in the country. I can not, his heart is wrong.

So true.Frelga wrote:No, the other one.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Is it Bilbo to Gandalf, talking about Frodo: "I want to see the wild country again before I die, and the Mountains; but he is still in love with the Shire, with woods and fields and little rivers."
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

No - later.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Does it concern Boromir?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is the word "country" in the original? How about "heart"?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No and no. But the first sentence preserves the meaning of the original pretty well.

Is it related to the Scouring of the Shire?
