Encryptions

Post by narya »

Not sure where to put this, so feel free to move it. I started this thread in TORC, but it petered out to just Mith and me, so I'm looking for fresh, um, players.

You may have seen Decodaquote or Cryptoquiz in your newspaper. The way it works, is a sentence is presented with each of the letters substituted with another letter. For example,

"READ THE SILMARILLION' could be presented as:
"FIEK LMI ABCDEFBCCBGH"

To solve the encryption, look for common letters and common words like "a" and "the". Also look for double letters or words with a repeating letter, such as the word "people" which has two "p"s in it. Hyphenated and contracted words are often helpful, as well.

You can see the methods we used to crack the codes in the previous thread: http://forums.theonering.com/viewtopic.php?t=95407 .

The sentence doesn't necessarily have to be Tolkien-related, but something that the members of this board would enjoy cracking. The ones in the paper take me about 5 minutes. The ones that Mith and I have traded, quotes from JRRT's books, have taken quite a bit longer.

Try to find a sentence that has several words that would make it easier to break the code, and which has few really long words, and few weird names, and which uses lots of different letters of the alphabet. No one is going to be able to break a sentence like "Meanwhile Morgoth escaped."

You don't have to wait your turn to post. Just post away, either encryption or decryption. That way we can have several going at once. It's really obvious when you get it right, so you don't have to wait for confirmation.

Here are three for starters.

#1. QBA BRUU GX XZM ZE R NURYA OBAMA NAGNUA YGFA XGM NARYA, RIP QBGCKBQ.

#2. "A BCDEFM FAGHCLO NPCOQL AR RSOFSTCTFT! ... C ESUL VWTF KLLO PLULGCOD CO AOL AR FEL DPLSFLTF GCFLPSPM NPCUCGLDLT SOX LINLPCLOQLT AR BM GCRL ... FEL TCGBSPCGGCAO ... DPLSFLP SOX BAPL TSFCTRMCOD FESO KAFE FEL EAKKCF SOX FEL GAPX AR FEL PCODT!" -- PCQESPX SXSBT, SWFEAP AR ZSFLPTECN XAZO

--------

#3. "ABCDE FGH ICJ KLMB NB BCOJBA GO HJBCOJBA PHD DE JCNBQ L RLSS JGD DCTB UOGN FGH GU PCQBPGOJ JGO QVF JGO DEOCSS."

-------

Note to Mith - #1 is new, #2 you already know, and #3 is the one I just posted on TORC, a quote from the Sil.

THE SILMARILLION ... GREATER AND MORE SATISFYING THAN BOTH THE HOBBIT AND THE LORD OF THE RINGS!”

It would help if I'd spelled it right. It should be Hall of Fire. And these should be where. Good job, though.

Code: Select all

the hall of fire is a place where people come for peace, and thought

Good job, TIGG! Post a new one :)

I've already solved the other one on TORc, so I'll let others give it a try here.

My favorite carol!

silent night holy night all is calm all is bright
zcfkum ucabm, bvrf ucabm, gff cz igft, gff cz hycabm

I just guessed it off the top of my head, from the pattern of the words, and vison's hint that it was seasonal!
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

:salmon: Read the rules Vison! It doesn't have to be Tolkien related. I just happen to be Tolkien obsessed, that's all.

Here's a favorite quote of mine, translated into English for your benefit:

"CMN XUNNT LW ONYXLA TOLKIENX BLAXCNOX" -- WOYAEQXEL KN CLDY
