The Dylan Appreciation Thread

My love for the songs of Robert Zimmerman (better known as Bob Dylan) is pretty well known). Practically not a day goes by when some song of his is going to through my head; there are just so darn many that have influenced me. So I thought I'd start this thread to give me (an anyone else) an opportunity to post some of those lyrics, or any thoughts about him.

Today's offering actually was co-written with someone named Jacques Levy:

I was not formerly a Dylan fan, but I am becoming warmer to him. People refer to him as a poet, which is fair enough.

But he's actually not a poet, he's a song writer and a wonderful song writer at that. Song lyrics do not often make good poetry, nor vice versa. Dylan's beautiful songs reveal their beauty through being sung, whether by him or another.

I have no favourite Dylan song, but I'm working on it. :hug:

I have no favorite Dylan song either. I have about a hundred favorite Dylan songs. :)

Probably through lack of exposure, I've never been a Dylan fan, but my college radio station has been playing an alternate version of "Don't Think Twice" off the recent No Direction Home boxset and I absolutely love love love it. I've since heard the original, which is still great, but this alternate version is better. :)

About 20 years or so ago I saw Dylan play with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers backing him up. Great show, in RFK Stadium in Washington. They opened for the Grateful Dead. :)

"It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" has the meter of a Blues piece, V. Is that the case? That end of that first stanza reminds me of the end of the final stanza in a Jimmi Hendrix piece:

I don't know a whole lot about Bob Dylan, and I only have his Greatest Hits album. :oops: But my favorite song from it is Positively Forth Street. :love:


And I love Like A Rolling Stone as well.

As I recall, V, he sang Desolation Row that night at RFK. Hilight of the whole night, if you ask me. :)

Indeed he did. As a duet with Bob Weir (who had been performing the song for several years with the Dead). One of the great highlights of my life. It was very raw musically, but emotionally it was incredible, as they both shouted out the last stanza together. Great memories. :)

As an aside about Desolation Row, my one great Halloween costume came from that song. It was one year in the late 80s or early 90s (I forget which) when the Dead were playing on Halloween at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland. I shaved off my beard, but left the moustache long and put flour in it and in my long, wildly curly hair to make them look grey. I then donned a cheap Robin Hood costume, plus I had plastic elephant trunk hanging from my neck to complete the costume:

And yes, several people did recognize me.
