its not easy.... :(

could it maybe be Grating?
grating as in raucous, strident, cacophonous and
Grating as in the item?

and:
just a wee something to get us started again while we contemplate Vision's tricksy clue

down under birds (4)

Down under birds ....

Are emus down under? And I presume down under means not in the right order if its cryptic, so ... muse, perhaps?

Yes! New Zealanders are called 'kiwis' after the bird. Kiwi used to be a brand of shoe polish here in the US ... might still be.

Jny  (I found it in a crossword and it took me nearly an hour to solve becasue I was thinking 'down' as in feathers.)

and of course Kiwi would have been equally correct as the plural of the 'Kiwi' bird is still Kiwi.

Was the answer emus or muse? I wasn't sure if it was cryptic or not.

Can you give us another hint, vison, without actually telling the answer?

Down Under is an idiom for Australia, as in the Men at Work song 'I come from a land down under'.

I thought it might have a double-meaning in this case.

So, something that "sounds like shit"? But what sort of item could that be?

Bellows?
