Hello Sunny! I've been lured back to the Hall of Fire by the temptation of the Rings of Power. I'd almost forgotten how much I enjoy this place. :)

I agree about the historical links - I have never googled so many 'who are the men in the civil war costumes/funny hat/big sword/long bows' questions before.

Rose, that image of the queue is amazing.

Plan to watch it later, at least some of it. Have BritBox, so it will be available. They've been covering pretty much everything to do with HM's death and Charles's accession to the throne.

My friend has a work trip planned for this week in London. There were murmurs from the HR in the London office on shifting her dates. I was like “Are you crazy? You must go now!” She’s on the flight to London right now! :)
Inanna, wondering if you've seen this video: The casual way the Queen handled the crown raised a lot of eyebrows! (This is St. Edward's crown, not the Imperial State crown, which has the Kohinoor diamond, and is the one the Queen wore for the opening of parliament and other state occasions.)
(Still having trouble referring to her in the past tense - had to edit my post. )

Lots of places want their stuff back from the UK.

I'm pretty sure this was taken in front of Buckingham palace.

Psalm to the Queue:
Laughing so hard at this - yes, it really does need to be celebrated!

I think the Koh I Noor was taken from a feudal ruler, long before the republic of India existed.

Not sure where they got it from. I'm sure it was totally legitimate.

Psalm to the Queue. Really very spot on.

I did watch the funeral, it was perfectly placed in prime time here (and on every free-to-air channel). Much glitter, pomp, circumstance and ritual, which was sometimes quite moving.

The music was sublime.

Yes, I saw both the ceremony at Winchester, and at Windsor (St. George's Chapel.) The young soldiers who handled the Queen's coffin deserve special mention for a difficult job well done.

Here's the history of the Koh-i-Noor diamond. Four different countries are claiming ownership. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koh-i-Noo ... 2038.2%20g).

It is the largest jewel in the Imperial crown, the one that was on top of Her Majesty's casket.

I did not watch any of the three funeral ceremonies (or however many were broadcast). And during the minute's silence, I was actually telling my daughter off for somersaulting on the sofa. :D

Regarding The Queue, I think it was more due to the fact that it was the Queen rather than the monarchy. I can't imagine such a queue for King Charles' coffin. Personally, I find it all a bit strange, to queue for many hours to then look at a box covered in a flag for a minute. (A funeral ceremony I can understand.)

Regarding the monarchy, I'd hope there would be talk of it once the King is settled in. Although I'm not sure who would talk about it. I presume Parliament, but as the Conservatives are in power, it might be a while.

As for why people queue for such an event, I would imagine it's more about wanting to be able to say they were present at such a big moment in history.

It doesn't make sense to me to queue for so long a time. It would be exhausting, especially for someone my age. But I could see myself taking a lawn chair, and lining up somewhere along the route of the funeral procession to catch a glimpse of the coffin, especially when it was being pulled on the gun carriage, as that would give a better view of it.

I found out today the coffin is lined with lead. That's why they needed 8 pallbearers instead of 6!

Saw this tweet about the queue on MetaTORC, and had to share!

People still queue to see Lenin's pickled body at the Mausoleum in the Red Square almost a century later. It used to be hours long, even in winter. People are weird and I've given up on asking why they do anything.

And also Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi. We visited there about 13 years ago, and decided to go along to view the mausoleum. At least at that time on that day we were the only visible Westerners in the line. I was struck by the total reverence of everyone in the queue, it seemed to be a pilgrimage of great meaning for them.

I didn't know they had Ho Chi Minh on display.

Off topic, but a coworker told me his friend had thought Moscow had Lennon's tomb. That Soviets loved John Lennon so much, they preserved his body.

On topic, I would like to think this is true.

This is very sweet - Charles remembering his mom. The film camera you see her using was a wedding gift from her father, and she used it a great deal. Charles once did a 2 hour long special about the life of the royal family, and there were many shots of his parents playing with their children. One featured Prince Philip riding his son's tricycle! The definitely were not the sort of parents who let the nannies do all the child-rearing! I love the bit where he talks about her coming into the bathroom wearing the crown, as she was preparing for her coronation!

So, this is what is being done with the teddy bears (and other stuffed animals) left along with the bouquets of flowers in memory of the Queen:
