Is it based on the recently discovered Tolkien's final draft, in which Fëanor donates the Silmarils for the repair of the Trees and his sons go on to lead happy and productive lives?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
