Prediction: they will claim the mall was being used as a weapons depot.

Not quite - they are saying it's a Ukrainian false flag. Like Bucha.

It's certainly like Bucha in being a crime against humanity.

Update - clarification from Ukraine is that there had been ~1000 people inside when the sirens went off, but most were able to leave the building in time. Currently there are 16 confirmed deaths.

OK, you can claim a point. Russians are claiming both that this was a Ukrainian false flag and that was a high precision strike on a weapons depot, and also that strike on the weapons depot accidentally damaged an empty mall.

Yeesh. It's like they're just throwing spaghetti at a wall to see what sticks. Did their propagandists have a falling out and stop coordinating? Is a manager asleep at the wheel?

I wonder what percentage of their population actually believes what they're told. I remember reading a novel written by a famous Russian author,* and one of the characters was grumbling about Pravda (official newspaper of the Communist Party - the name means 'truth') He said something like "Why should I believe anything that lying rag publishes?"

*No, I have no clue who the author was, or what the book was. Too long ago.

I'm sorry if my response sounded flip, that wasn't my intention. War is a horrible, horrible thing. For what? The ego of one horrid person (using the word 'person' lightly).

From the New York Times, based on an analysis of almost eight million Russian articles about Ukraine:

Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz says that if Republican take control of Congress, he will see to it that the U.S. stops funding Ukraine's defense against Russia.

I guess putin still has enough money to buy Republican politicians.

On the other hand, Ukraine was meant to be a lesson to Russia's vassal states. Increasingly, the lesson seems to be "you and what army?"

In this video, a member of the Chechen parliament says that Chechen troops joined Russia's invasion of Ukraine as part of an Islamic jihad and that he expects that after defeating Ukraine, the Chechen battalions will push all the way to Berlin.

Ah, they must be preparing to retreat.

Actually, that would be the smartest thing for putin to do. Europe would probably reward him by lifting sanctions, he could restructure his military, jail (ok, who am I kidding, execute) top embezzlers, and come back in a 5-10 years as a real military power. But perhaps he knows he doesn't have that much time.
One Russian soldier to another:

What’s the news?

Putin says we’re at war with NATO!

How’s it going?

- We’ve lost 35,000 soldiers, 400 aircraft, and 1700 tanks, 3700 APVs, 800 Artillery, 160 cruise missiles, 15 boats . .

How about NATO?

- Oh, they haven’t arrived yet!

I'm surprised the bridge is still passable. I guess you wouldn't want to take any heavy military vehicles over it after that, though?

Russia executed dozens of Ukrainian POWs, including the defenders of Azovstal, then attempted a transparent cover up by burning down the prison where they were held and claiming it to be a Ukrainian strike.

Meanwhile, NYT published another article calling for negotiations with putin.

The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.

"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

Apparently, Ukrainian Forces have blown up a military airport in Crimea, over 200 km. inside Russian-held territory. Ukraine has not officially acknowledged it, of course, but it certainly looks like they were responsible. Many Russian military aircraft were destroyed.

"accidental detonation of ammunition stores" my a**!
