Tolkien biopic
Re: Tolkien biopic
Those visuals are certainly unexpectedly beautiful but if anything it makes me more skeptical. Really don't like the idea of telling Tolkiens story filled with heavy handed allusions to LOTR.

Yes, I've only heard good things about it. Hopefully I'll get to see it at some point.Alatar wrote:I think you would have loved the Beren and Lúthien Radio play V. (ETA: I mean Tolkien in Love)
yov, I took the heavy-handed allusions to LOTR to be more a product of typical trailer editing; but I was happy to see strong ties to the rest of the legendarium, and an emphasis on the fellowship of the TCBS (as well as his love affair with Edith).

Good: the forest dance that inspired Beren/Lúthien

Re: Tolkien biopic
That looks amazing!
I can't read the tiny writing at the end - is it going to be in theatres?

I really like the trailer (lots of fan-service aside - like the Balrog's face in that sword clash), and I like Hoult as an actor. Here's hoping!
Btw, I'm having trouble logging in from my phone. Every time I log in, it keeps logging me out. Works fine on a PC though. Any idea how to fix this?

That's strange. I don't know why that would be.

Re: Tolkien biopic
Gotta say it looks pretty good. While I'm sure it will be a minor part of the film, I was happy to see a glimpse of Tolkien's rugby experience. I was a little worried they might try to push Tolkien's life into a more conventional modern picture of "geekiness" (as with The Imitation Game and pop culture images of "geniuses"), so I'm glad to see at least one piece of circumstantial evidence that hopefully won't be the case.

Could be great. Or it could be terrible.
Likely it will be somewhere in between.

I'm getting the vibe of an enjoyable but paint-by-numbers biopic. With some historical fudging and a few fantasy sequences that could be good or awful.

TIL that Tolkien and CS Lewis once turned up for a party that was not a costume party dressed as polar bears, and I hope it's included in the movie.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

In fact I demand that's is included in the movie or I will stand outside Dome Karukoski's home with pitchfork and torch.Frelga wrote:TIL that Tolkien and CS Lewis once turned up for a party that was not a costume party dressed as polar bears, and I hope it's included in the movie.

I don't know. I give the filmmakers credit for picking up on what I think is a pretty little-known idea of Tolkien about the beauty of the words "cellar door" (which I've actually never understood), but I'm not sure it comes off at least in the context of that clip. I do like the "trees" however.
