Is it Bilbo caught by the trolls? Something like "yes lots" and then "none at all"?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

You've got it. The exact quote is "Yes, lots".

Your turn!

How is that emphatic?

Saying there are lots is more emphatic than just saying "there are". Also, I was trying to give a hint by saying it was a lot more emphatic.

It sent me down the “Yes!” (exclamation) route. Sniff.

Is it time for a new quote?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I'll get to my books shortly.

Is it Gandalf to Frodo recounting the story of the one ring?

Is the word rumor/rumour in the original quote?

Aragorn? When listening to the ground for “rumour” of the orcs?

“The rumour of the earth is dim and confused”. Aragorn to Gimli & Legolas as he tries to listen to the orcs by putting his head on the ground.

Yes.

My favorite take on that chapter is the Tumblr post that pointed out that the next time Aragorn does this, Legolas can see the Riders perfectly well and yet he leaves Aragorn sprawled on the ground before showing off.

Your turn.
