Mystery solved - I had a wrong word going down. Change the initial "e" to an "i" and you'll be able to fill in the missing letters.

Where I thought it was "ecity"/"empty". The initial "e" is an "i". Which gives you

The thing that makes Wordle difficult is that one's guesses cannot be random letters but must be a word in their database. One has to get lucky with their first and second word choices.
