We have a Bard!
Luke Evans To Play Bard in 'The Hobbit'
He looks a little younger than I would have liked, but I'm not surprised by that. Other than that, I like his look, but I don't know anything about his acting ability.

And Deadline is also now reporting:
Benedict Cumberbatch To Voice Smaug in 'The Hobbit'
The say that he will "portray Smaug via motion capture." The odd thing is that they also say "He is already on the picture, providing the voice of the character Necromancer." That's odd! I certainly hope that the Necromancer/Sauron doesn't sound like Smaug.

On the other hand, Gollum and the Witchking also were voiced by the same person, and I don't think anyone reasonably could complain that THEY sounded too much alike.

About time too! I'm not really bothered either way about Evans, since I don't know anything about him, which in itself is a good thing. It would have been easy to turn Bard into a celebrity Cameo like Sean Connery's Richard the Lionheart in Robin Hood.
Delighted to get some confirmation on Benedict Cumberbatch also!

The Vinyamars on Stage! This time at Bag End
He was Apollo in "Clash of the Titans", and had the part of the sherrif's thug in Russell Crowe's "Robin Hood" last year; his latest role is Aramis in the upcoming remake of "The Three Muskateers"Voronwë the Steadfast wrote:We have a Bard!

As for not looking old enough (he's 32) in this photo he could pass muster!

I agree, excellent news about Cumberbatch....and if true, confirms that our Necromancer/Sauron will be CGI - I wonder how they are visualizing him...
There is magic in long-distance friendships. They let you relate to other human beings in a way that goes beyond being physically together and is often more profound.

Somehow I've missed all of this. Well, no matter. Here's another update, and I'll get all of them added soon:
Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.
Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.
I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.
Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!
More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!
Cheers,
Peter J

I see Bard as having a thin, chiseled face. Probably because he is an inveterate malcontent, and people who are never pleased with anything tend to have thin faces, IMO, not the jolly round ones, which come from enjoyment of food and company.Inanna wrote:For some reason in my head, Bard has a rounder face than Evans. Wonder if I got that from an illustration or some pre-conceived notions of a honest face, as Dave mentions.
He may be a fine Bard, but I can really see him as Aramis! Can't wait till that one, I hope it gets full epic treatment.
Evangeline Lilly looks like a young and wholesome Liv Tyler.
P.S.: Looked at The Three Musketeers poster. Never mind that one.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Interesting that PJ makes a point of debunking any thought that Tauriel has a romantic link with Legolas. And also that he says that she is the "first true Sylvan Elf" they have brought to life. That argues against the idea that she is Thranduil's daughter (which her name suggested to me).
