Irish General Election.

Post by Crucifer »

Ho Hum. Fianna Fáil (Republicans) back in, despite messing up the health service and the education. Labour losing seats all over the shop, despite being brilliant. Socialists still on one seat... :(

I must admit I'm not very informed about the situation in Ireland.
I heard this morning on the radio that the election results were in, but (being still half asleep) only remember that this time some more people went to vote, as opposed to a mere 62% five years ago, and that I was surprised elections were held only each five years.
So, is it a big Republican majority? (And are you using Republican in the US sense of the word, so people know what's meant, or is that the name? Are they comparable to British Conservatives?)
Maybe you could tell us a bit more about what parties you get in the Irish Parliament? :D
(I guess I could google it, but this way it's more fun. ;) )
but being a cheerful hobbit he had not needed hope, as long as despair could be postponed.

Basically, Fianna Fáil (who call themselves the republican party) have been in power for most of the duration of the Irish Parliament.
Directly opposed to them ar Fine Gael, who split off at the beginning. Fine Gael for Michael Collins, Fianna Fáil for Eamonn De Valera.
Close to Fine Gael at the moment are the Labour Party, but I'd say they might go with Fianna Fáil.
Socialist party, which speaks for itself, have no seats this year :(
Sinn Féin, bloody Fascists (the political branch of the terrorist IRA) are losing seats all over the place. :hooray:
P.D.s, who are living in the 19th Century and want to ban under 21 year olds from being within city limits after 9, are also losing seats. :hooray:
The Green party, environmentalists, are pretty steady.
Independants, ditto.

I expected the Government to be returned. Was it as narrow as everyone was saying?

No. Fianna Fáil are currently ahead by 20 seats, but there are still around 50 unassigned seats. It won't be until tomorrow afternoon that the smoke clears, and then the fun really starts...

Nice to see a balanced unprejudiced view of Irish politics. I particularly like the description of Sinn Féin as fascists. I would suggest that when someone asks for an explanation of Irish politics, throwing around words like terrorist and fascist is hardly balanced.

IRA = Illegal terroist organisation, fighting for the liberation of the downtrodden Catholics in Northern Ireland.

*Downtrodden Catholics? What downtrodden Catholics*
*SHHH*

Thankfully recently disbanded.

Gerry Adams = Leader of Sinn Féin, ex high profile member of IRA (Possibly even leader?)

therefore, Sinn Féin equals political branch of recently disbanded terrorist fascists IRA, hence Sinn Féin fascists.

Actually, Sinn Fén are far closer to socialism than fascism. What you're doing is throwing around a loaded word for the gut reaction it provokes.

Sinn Féin may be a lot of things, but they are not fascists. Their economic policy is abysmal, but they are not fascists. Their party politics is rooted in local government, but they are not fascists. Their party may be founded on money raised from illegal activities, but they are not fascists. In fact the only thing remotely fascist about their agenda is that they want a united Ireland, which is incidentally a cornerstone of the Irish constitution.

Please. Try not to use loaded soundbytes and dogma to further your own political opinions. You were asked for more info on the parties in Irish politics, not a party political broadcast.

Frankly, the only difference between Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil is about 90 years.

OK, so I admit that it wasn't a very fair summary of Irish politics, but personally I am not a big fan of Sinn Féin. (Or Fianna Fáil for that matter. 'm a labour fan m'self.)

Back to Life of Brian--

REG: Right. You're in. Listen. The only people we hate more than the Romans are the f*****g Judean People's Front.

P.F.J.: Yeah...

JUDITH: Splitters.

P.F.J.: Splitters...

FRANCIS: And the Judean Popular People's Front.

P.F.J.: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Splitters. Splitters...

LORETTA: And the People's Front of Judea.

P.F.J.: Yeah. Splitters. Splitters...

REG: What?

LORETTA: The People's Front of Judea. Splitters.

REG: We're the People's Front of Judea!

LORETTA: Oh. I thought we were the Popular Front.

REG: People's Front! C-huh.

FRANCIS: Whatever happened to the Popular Front, Reg?

REG: He's over there.

P.F.J.: Splitter!
