Re: Nature Pics
That tree is one my favorite very old friends. It is the largest and oldest tree in the Henry Cowell State Park, down the road from us, at approximately 277 feet tall, about 16 feet wide, and around 1,500 years old.

So nice to know. I love how it twists upward! Beautiful!

Re: Nature Pics
We were just there the other week. Lovely place!
We happened upon a docent talk explaining this weird tree. She said that "normal" redwoods have a hormone that designates a single branch for vertical growth and the rest form a canopy. Then if the main trunk breaks at the top, the other branches race each other up until one becomes the main trunk.
She said this tree is probably a mutant that lacks that hormone. So all the branches keep going up, and the tree keeps building up the trunk to buttress it. So you have a tree that is only 600yo, but has the girth of a much older tree.
Redwoods are so cool.

She/he’s so pretty, V. Love those eyes & spots!
See the far off color? That’s the setting sun shining off the snow capped Himalayas. As my flight was approaching Dehradun.

V, adorable! We don't see as many babies for some reason. Maybe they need to get their strength up to travel from the hills.
Inanna, that's gorgeous. Is that the flight home?

The same tree had Pygmy Nuthatches, including one who felt the urge to feed the swallow babies.

Re: Nature Pics
What beautiful birds narya! We don't have violet green swallows. Stunning. the nuthatch feeding the nestlings.
I saw your lovely photos on FB but as you know I shy away from commenting on public posts. I did enjoy them though!

Re: Nature Pics
My secrets to great bird shots?
1. A good telephoto lense on a digital camera.
2. Stand in the woods for an hour until the birds decide you are not a threat and go back to doing their thing.
3. Take 100s of pictures, toss out most of them, crop the rest severely.
