58% of those Americans who voted for Barack Obama in 2012 and Donald Trump in 2016 believe abortion should be available for any reason (per the New York Times last month).

A synagogue in Boynton Beach, Florida has sued that state on the grounds that its 15-week abortion ban violates religious freedom.

It does violate religious freedom, but I'm curious whether the synagogue has standing to sue.

Fears for US woman's life as abortion denied in Malta
The couple, from the US, were on holiday in Malta when Andrea Prudente, who's 16-weeks pregnant, started losing blood. Doctors told her the placenta was partly detached and her pregnancy was no longer viable.

But the baby's heart was still beating - and in Malta this means that by law doctors cannot end the pregnancy.
The only way the doctors can interfere is if she is dying of sepsis. By then, it could be too late. In no event will there be a living infant.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

And this is the situation that Republicans as of today can and in many cases will make the reality in the U.S. Welcome to the new dark ages.

Proposed: every time a woman is forced to give birth against her will, the prospective father should be forced to have a vasectomy and an appendectomy.

And that likely would still more dangerous for the woman than for the man!

Oh, it's much worse than Malta. Some states define pregnancy as beginning with fertilization. That means even ectopic pregnancy can't be aborted, despite having a high probability of killing the mother and 0 probability of producing a baby. It also means that they will attack most forms of birth control next.

That isn't accurate. It was actually Roe that imposed a position on the entire population. This returns the question to the states, where the people have a voice.

Women will be forced to undergo childbirth, which is a fairly dangerous procedure (certainly compared to abortion), against their wills. Their voices won't count.

My position:

Practically speaking, however, the best way to achieve this may be for Democrats should loudly be saying that if they get two more Senators and retain control of the House, they will carve out the filibuster to pass a national law providing for abortion rights for any reason in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy (this is supported by a clear majority of Americans) and in cases where the potential mother's life is in danger at any point.

I think that there IS a small possibility that the Democrats could get a net gain of two Senators (though I think it is unlikely). I think there is zero possibility of holding the House. I think they lost the House in 2020 when they unexpectedly lost so many seats and had their majority surprisingly shaved to a minimum. Between the historical precedent of the opposition party almost always gaining significant numbers of seats during the mid-terms, the perceived poor economy and high inflation (particularly gas prices) and Biden's law approval rate, I can't see even a surge of interest by people outraged by the Dobbs case and/or the 1/6 hearings making enough difference to overcome those factors when the current majority is so slim.

Louisiana has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the US. It also has a high rate of infant mortality. I wonder if these issues will get attention now that they've gotten abortion out of their system. We'll see if babies ever were the priority here.

They weren't, they aren't, and they won't be. This is not about "life", this is about enforcing gender roles in the service of theocracy.

When Republicans regain control of the legislature, they will pass a nationwide ban.

Thousands of women will die from
Ectopic pregnancy
Faulty implantation
Uterine demise
Eclampsia
Sepsis
High risk pregnancy with hypertension, heart disease, cancer, history of blood clots
Homicide by the impregnating male or male relative

Most of which are preventable with modern health care. Most of these will not result in a living infant, but will orphan thousands of children.

Maternal mortality, already 2x the next developed country (174/100K live births vs. 8.7 France, and that's not counting deaths from causes not directly related to pregnancy), will skyrocket.

What a great victory for the conservatives.

Awful, if unsurprising, news. Bracing for the upcoming legislative battle over a nationwide abortion ban, since the pro-life crowd can stop pretending to care about states' rights now.
