It took me five tries to find a quote that the translation party changed even a little.I made friends in a short period of time, so I think I must be in a hurry - perhaps they are retreating towards young people.

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Was it spoken by Treebeard?

Go for it, Jude. I couldn't find it.

I'm still in the guessing stage - so if anyone has it, feel free to jump in!

This could be it:
Treebeard to Gandalf, speaking of Merry and Pippin. We have become friends in so short a while that I think I must be getting hasty - growing backwards towards youth, perhaps.

I had the opposite problem to Frelga: I tried some quotes and they came out unrecognizable.
But I think this one is solveable:

Is it Gollum (I don't know what the quote is, but it sounds like his rhythm).
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Just knowing Gollum I'm guessing its "Bless us and Save us, my precious" but I have no idea where or when he might have said it.

Voronwë is correct, Alatar is mostly correct.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it this from The Hobbit when Gollum first spots Bilbo: "Bless us and splash us, my precioussss! I guess it's a choice feast; at least a tasty morsel it'd make us, gollum!"
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

That's the one! I think it's the very first thing he says in the books!

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Did you include the "gollum!" in the quote? I guess it just eliminated it rather than try to come up with some kind of homonym?
Here is the new quote:
It may not be one of the minor issues

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Actually, I only included the first sentence. Translationparty transformed "my precious" into "it's my loved one".

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That makes sense.
The new one didn't change all that much.

And are the words full or empty?
