On a sidenote - the episode of Buffy I watched last nite was one of the saddest bits of fiction I've ever encountered. I was kinda incapacitated for a few hours after watching it. Shed real tears which is somewhat rare for me.

(For fans - it's THAT episode in Season 5.)

Can you give me a hint in spoiler tags? I assumed it was an ep in Season 6 that you were referring to.

It was

the episode where Buffy's mom dies. The entire episode is this unexpectedly direct and insightful meditation on tragedy of death and the nature of grief. I found it very, very powerful.
.

But - spoiler alert! - you mean there might be an even sadder one in season 6??? :help: :help: :help:

Well, depends on the person I guess. The Season 6 one is the episode that I immediately thought of.

Yeah, I've only watched that one once. Can't handle it again on the re-runs. :( There's only one other Buffy episode I skip every time.

Did you notice there was no music in the episode? That's part of what makes it so very different.

I did notice the lack of music. It was a very powerful touch. It made everything feel much more real. As if it needed to be. :(

....aaaaaand I just watched the Buffy finale. And I'm feeling kinda...disappointed.

It wasn't terrible but after the ever-increasing amazingness of each season, the last season felt like it was fairly weak in general and I was really hoping the final solution wouldn't just be another "here's some random magic thing we found last minute" (also see: Angel's disappointing season 4 apocalypse solution). And I was really hoping The First's big, scary plan was more impressive than the lame "here's a bunch of ugly monsters for you to stab". I really appreciated what they tried to do with the "give all the power" thing, that was a lovely moment, but in a show that never cared too much about making sense it made even less sense than usual and, maybe worse, didn't even really feel like it accomplished much in the moment. All in all a minor let down for a show I otherwise very much came to love.

My latest TV obsession was a marathon viewing of the BBC's "Broadchurch."

What a powerful, honest look at a family's grief, at a town torn by accusations and guilt, at the corrosive effect of secrets. Oh yes, and an interesting whodunit as well.

The acting was top-notch, especially by David Tennant.

I highly recommend it. I want to watch it again. And since I bought the season on iTunes, I shall.
Take my hand, my friend. We are here to walk one another home.

Just Netflix binged on all of Battlestar Galactica (the reset, not the original). Such an incredibly good show that I don't think it qualifies as a guilty pleasure!

We are still hooked on Dirty Jobs and anything with David Attenborough.
I love the concept of Dirty Jobs, and the subject matter (pun intended!) but can't help but find the host to be a bit of an arrogant creep. Just rubs me the wrong way.

So fracking good.

It helps that Edward James Olmos is the TV incarnation of my father. I tear up just listening to the guy give orders!

I am growing fond of the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, from Australia. Both the aesthetic and character types resonate with my work in progress.

I watch very little TV, but I am currently going through this - near the end of season 2 (pacing myself). It's very good!

Speaking of tears, did anyone watch the NCIS season finale? It was a beautiful tribute to Ralph Waite, who played Gibb's dad, and also, of course, the father on The Waltons TV series.

There were also some very touching revelations about Gibbs and his personal life, and what makes him tick. It was one of the best things I've seen on TV this year, AND, with the series about to go into its 11th year, it drew the largest TV audience for that times slot!

Pretty amazing...

The characters just seem to be getting stronger and stronger!

I really liked Ralph Waite, who was not your typical Hollwyood actor. He became an ordained minister later in life. So, the tears I shed were as much for the real person as for his alter-ego, Jackson Gibbs.

But the tears I shed for Leroy Jethro Gibbs were for GIBBS, the character Mark Harmon and the series writers and directors have developed and made me come to love over the last 10 years.

Its very rare for me to get that attached to a character on a TV show!
Hidden text.
What made me cry was where he tells Director Vance that he doesn't need more time off to mourn his father, because his work is his life and his family. (That wasn't the exact words he used, of course.) I thought, "Damn, Gibbs, you deserve so much MORE than that!"

Here's how the episode came to be. There are some minor spoiler-ish things, but nothing that's going to ruin the story for you if you haven't seen it already. They went out of their way to avoid them, for the most part.

NCIS New Orleans...

Okay, was anyone else really, really annoyed by last night's ep? :nono:

I'd better put this in spoiler tags:
Hidden text.
Cade, Chris's brother, was accused of raping and murdering a young woman. Halfway through the hour-long story, he is STILL in jail, and it looks really bad for him. Then it hits me: wait, if the girl was raped, why didn't they just test the DNA of the sperm to confirm who the rapist and (assume) killer was? I suppose Cade COULD have had sex with her, and not killed her, but Loretta, the M.E., said her examination made it obvious the woman was strangled during the rape.
I mean, did they really think we were that dumb??
