Heretofore my only exposure to the mighty-thewed Cimmerian was the firs movie and (years ago) a couple of comic books. But curiosity (and Project Gutenberg) led me to check out R. E. Howard's original Hyborian Age stories from the Thirties.
They're FUN!!
No, Great Art they ain't. But inventive mind-candy, good rollicking sword-n-sorcery, a real junkfood confection. Comparing Howard to Tolkien is like comparing Ludlum to Le Carre - don't bother. But for brain-off recreation, a beach read, check him out!
(Well worth it as an alternative exercise in "world-building" is REH's essay "The Hyborian Age," which lays out the rise and fall of peoples and empires between the sinking of Atlantis and the creation of the modern world).
