Hm. I thought it was probably something like that. I doubt if I'd notice much difference, even if I DID have a fancy-schmancy TV. When they came out with the iPad 3, which was supposed to have this ultra-resolution screen, I checked it out in the Apple store. I ended up buying an iPad 2, since they were on sale and I could see absolutely NO difference in the screen!

I've found that well-made regular DVDs such as LotR are much sharper and clearer on our fairly large HDTV than poorly made Blu-Rays.

A well-made Blu-Ray, though—LotR or Avatar, say—is stunning. My not-so-great eyes see a definite difference, and I do appreciate the cinematic level of detail.

But analog film has many times the resolution of Blu-Ray, which is why you can get Blu-Rays of old movies and TV shows. I suppose if the media mongers get their way and we all have screens that cover entire walls of our houses, we'll want 4K resolution or better.

But at that point I personally will climb a mountain with a well-stocked Kindle and become a hermit.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Would it make a difference on a 32 inch HD TV? Like Jewel, I don't usually notice much difference between screens, but the difference between this TV and our old TV (which was about the same size screen) is astounding.

If you have HD you will likely notice the difference.

If it's 1080p HD especially.

Finally!

The Hobbit Blu-rays Officially Announced and Detailed
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed both the standard Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet and 3D BD/DVD/Ultraviolet Combo Pack releases of director Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Both versions of the theatrical cut of the film are set to feature DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround, and arrive on Blu-ray on March 19th.

Standard Blu-ray Combo Pack
3D Blu-ray Combo Pack
Official synopsis: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first chapter in Peter Jackson's new epic trilogy set in Middle-Earth 60 years before J.R.R. Toklien's "The Lord of the Rings" saga. Follow Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he's swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs, giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. They must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature Gollum (Andy Serkis), who will change his life forever. Alone with Gollum on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers guile and courage that surprise him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities, tied to the fate of all Middle-Earth. Several key talent members from The Lord of the Rings trilogy reprise their roles, along with exciting new cast members.

WOW!!!! thanks to both Elen & Alatar for this terrific news. I dont honestly know what I am more excited about - the DVD or seeing the SMAUG trailer feature.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

Certainly seems WB are worried about fans holding out for the EEs instead of purchasing the TE...

And what does "select digital retailers" mean? Will I not get the code if I order from Amazon or buy it in the local supermarket???

We have a big tv and there is a noticable difference in the quality of the Blue Ray on some films more than others. Avatar looks wonderful, where as on the ealy Harry Pooter films transitions the difference is marginal
Since 1410 most Welsh people most of the time have abandoned any idea of independence as unthinkable. But since 1410 most Welsh people, at some time or another, if only in some secret corner of the mind, have been "out with Owain and his barefoot scrubs." For the Welsh mind is still haunted by it's lightning-flash vision of a people that was free.

Having big 1080p TV does make a difference...mostly I see it in the older stuff compared to the newer blu-ray stuff. Avatar is amazing but some of the older stuff looks even more cheezy IMHO.

And yes for the release of AUJ in March, I have a young friend who will be thrilled that he doesn't have to wait until December like he though he would. He's in a place in the world that he can't go to the movies to see it and was totally bummed he wouldn't be able to see it when he gets home in May.

its the hat hair that keeps me away from the fashion statement. I am VERY vain about my hair. A true Child of the Sixties and all that. Although if I could find something in a big purple wide brim number with a gold buckle and peacock feather -that just might convert me.

I know what you mean about the hat hair...I have the same problem. 'Course us women get around that problem with fascinators...

So let me get this straight: in order to get this code I need to be looking out for a shady guy in a large purple, feathered, wide-brimmed hat...and I need to give him the rights to our SIL script, to do whatever he pleases with, and never see him again???

 sure there should be a suitcase full of money involved in there somewhere...

Exactly. I believe Hemingway said something about a writer and a producer meeting at midnight on the beach..... the author tosses the book to the producer who in turn tosses a suitcase filled with money back to the author and that is how film deals from books get done.
