Gungnir posted this on TORC today:
From Ian McKellen's twitter feed this weekend, referring to The Hobbit...
"Sets are ready, script ready and movie is casting this month. Fans are not to worry”
So, apparently, something is going on in the background.

They're a bit behind the times over at TORC. I posted about that here ten days ago.

No, it's me who is behind the times. I don't have the time to hunt for first hand rumours about the movie over the web...

Me neither. That's why we have Voronwë.

Alatar wrote:Funny, I had the opposite experience. I was there for all the really early discussions before Fellowship and I left just before it came out cause of the ridiculous (to me...) Purist vs Revisionist stuff. You would not believe how many pages of vitriol there was over stuff that never even ended up on screen. Arwen at Helms Deep anyone? And the stuff from the trailers that was going to completely DESTROY the movie, like Ring on a Plinth and Boromir Holds the Ring!

Anyway, I got so frustrated with the nit-picking I left. I think my skin is thicker now. ;)
That was my experience as well. All the rabid speculation when there was no (or little) news led to some weird panics - like, for awhile, people thought Éomer's character was cut because Éowyn had been cast but he hadn't. And Théoden's character was slated to be in the first movie, and everyone got into an uproar as to how that was NOT RIGHT!!! I was gone (from the movies forum) by the time trailers were being dissected, and did not return until after RotK had been released in theaters. It was fun, but there was need for some calming influence and voice of reason to keep it fun.

There were also no moderators in those days, so keeping people civil was a challenge the community met in different ways.

UPDATED WRITE-THRU - EXCLUSIVE: In what amounts to a dream come true for fans of Middle Earth, Peter Jackson has decided to direct two installments of The Hobbit, trusted sources are telling me. His deal is being negotiated right now with Warner Bros , New Line, and MGM. He will shortly take the reins over from Guillermo del Toro, after Jackson extricates himself from other project obligations that caused Jackson and manager Ken Kamins to initially deny he would direct. While Jackson’s camp has been tight-lipped, I’m told that the case is being made to MGM's owners to loosen the purse strings and make the movies happen. The impetus for these talks is that Jackson will be the director of both of The Hobbit films, which will be shot back-to-back in his New Zealand backyard. The secret's out.

Can't say that I'm surprised.

He'll probably do a decent job, like he did with the LOTR. I just hope that this time, he'll stay away from exaggeration, which I think was the biggest fault in the LOTR movies. (Oh, and no fart jokes either, please.)

Agreed Rowenberry.

I been feeling like these movies are going to take forever. I would have never guessed we'd be all the way through Harry Potter films before the Hobbit even got off the ground in production.

TORN has posted an interview with Sir Ian in New Zealand in which he discusses Waiting for Godot, but also talks about The Hobbit. He says that there will be an "imminent" announcement, but whether it will say that the films are a go, or are not a go, he doesn't know. He also says that he is not going to wait around for the films indefinitely, and if they don't get started soon, he may not be able to participate.

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Actually, I feel rather encouraged. I can't imagine that an "imminent" announcement is going to be about bad news. And I also can't imagine Sir Ian passing up a chance to play Gandalf under any circumstances, if he can possibly do it. After all, to paraphrase Tolkien in The Hobbit, Sir Ian means Gandalf, and Gandalf means him!

Latest interview with Gandalf in the Sydney Morning Herald...

(you need to scroll halfway down the page!)
”I’m waiting to hear when the Hobbit is going to be made,” McKellen said. ”We don’t know who is going to direct it. Peter Jackson is currently the producer and he’s currently casting it. I’ve just been to Wellington where I met a lot of people who have been working on it for a year now. The sets are being built. The costumes are being designed. The creatures are being designed. It is all ready to go.
I think a decision will be made very soon. And if it is to be made, filming will start quite soon. If it goes the other way, I think it will be put on ice.”
"on ice"!!! :scarey: doesn't bear thinking about...:wimper:

Thanks, Elen! I find it very difficult to believe that PJ would be actively casting the film if it wasn't extremely likely that it was going to go forward, with him as the director. But we'll see. Probably by the time of Comic-con (which I believe is around July 22).

That would definitely be the place to announce it for maximum buzz. That's their core base. We Tolkien people are a mixed bag when it comes to the films. :P
