The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.

Found it! I remembered the quote but not the context - I thought it was either Faramir talking to Frodo & Sam, or Beregond talking to Pippin. But it was Boromir, at the Council of Elrond:
I was in the company that held the bridge, until it was cast down behind us.
