The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
My son did this mono-dialog for his school play audition.'He sees. He knows. He heard us make silly promises — against His orders, yes....
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

And who you are, even the friends whose stupidity led you to this death.

That sounds so reflective of our current times.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it Denethor to Pippin: "Go now, and die in what way seems best to you. And with whom you will, even that friend whose folly brought you to this death." (Probably just the second sentence.)
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

V, that's the one.
Although Inanna isn't wrong, either.

Confirm what you have heard recently
This changed so much that I will give a hint from the get-go. A word that was in the original quote and has completely disappeared with no apparent replacement is one whose modern usage is very different than the use it is given here.

Yup!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
So the overall meaning of the original is nothing like the meaning of the translation?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I wouldn't say "nothing like" but the one key word that I mentioned above changes to a different word that changes that feel of the quote. Otherwise it is pretty similar.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is this word something that we language geeks have discussed on the boards over the years?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Not so much, but it is word that probably appeared fairly regularly in a long thread in Lasto that was started and long maintained by nerdanel.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

No, the other big thread in Lasto that nel started and maintained, and repeatedly changed the title of to reflect changing laws and court decisions about a particular issue.
