My husband wanted to try watching Supergirl- so we started an episode. When she grabbed a downed electric line and stopped the electricity from flowing by kinking the wire I drew the line. There's no way I'm going to watch a show that allows THAT to happen.

In view of my disappointment with Interstellar because of the magical thinking it employed, I suspect Arrival may be a bridge too far for me.
Conjuring is fine and fun when the film is outright fantasy, but if the premise is supposed to be serious, the hocus-pocus pulls me right out of the mind-set and I just can't get back in.

Star Wars, on the other hand...

Impy, Arrival is MUCH less magical-thinking-ish than Interstellar. I honestly couldn't quite abide Interstellar. Whereas Arrival I liked. The premise gets abbreviated (they learn the aliens' language quickly), but there's a logical explanation underneath what might seem "magical." I recommend seeing the film, and then reading the short story it's based on.....

Hacksaw Ridge and Rogue One. Both excellent films, and proof that relatively simple concepts in film-making go a long way. I'll need to sleep on it, but Rogue One might actually be the elusive post-1980 really good Star Wars film.

In my opinion Rogue One is probably the best Star Wars movie yet. Period. Fanservicy as all hell, but breathtaking. If the original movie was based on the old War movies and Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, this was the Guns of Navarone. Also, an incredibly well made film that actually manages to improve A New Hope by providing background and weight to some of the weaker parts of the original. No spoilers here, but any Star Wars fan needs to see this movie.

I loved both.

And what Alatar said about Rogue One. Good story, great characters, a fine production, and (to me) genuinely moving in an understated way. Loved the ending. Tears in my eyes, an absolute first for a Star Wars movie.

The connections to Episode 4 were fun, but it was the characters we'd never met before who interested me the most.

Saw The Lobster.
It's like nothing I've never seen before. It's very weird (in a good way), hilarious despite being completely glum, and has what I consider the most haunting closing shot I've seen in modern cinema.

Our son talked us into watching The Departed.

Excellent performances from Jack Nicholson, and Leonardo DiCaprio, and powerful film, but violent. Left me feeling gutted similarly to when I saw No Country For Old Men.

Not a film I would have chosen to see, but I'm glad I saw it. Jarrah's recommendations have yet to go wrong.

I just watched The Little Prince on Netflix. Delightful movie. I didn't know the source material so just enjoyed it for what it was. My son commented that its the sort of movie they could study and pull apart for themes and symbolism in school and completely ruin it!



The mixture of stop motion, cgi and traditional animation is simply gorgeous.
