Physical violence against children

We've had a short exchange about this in the Parlour, but I was very surprised by the reactions, which seemed to consider this something of a taboo topic. Well, there couldn't be much better incentive to start discussing it than that, of course. :D What is your attitude towards physical violence as ...

But from the description they don't just 'accompany someone's personnel' in a dangerous area - they 'keep the peace' etc. I think the idea of mercenaries as such (i.e. people who are in the army for the money - mercenaries ARE professional soldiers) isn't the problem, but it needs to be the governme...

I recall reading that Blackwater personnel unauthorizedly launched armed patrols of Louisiana after Katrina. And here's a quote, apparently from their own website: "We are not simply a 'private security company,' " Blackwater boasts on its corporate website. "We are a professional mi...

It's still much preferable to catching typhoid, I think.

I don't think that swallowing the chlorine is a problem for the lungs. I guess it's true you can have too much of it, but if you are sensitive to it, you should swim in a lake or so instead of a swimming pool.

Re: The Eye of Argon

LordM, it seems that in order to make the link show up better, the tags have to be inside the url-tags. A lot of you have probably heard of this story. It is, after all, legendary in science fiction and fantasy circles for being the worst single work of fiction ever published. It was written in 1970...

There are books published with one or the other or both. In my appendix (Penguin Classics) it says: The cancelled ending has only once been prefered to its successor by the editor of a printed text. George Bernard Shaw, with his familiear iconoclasm, used it in a limited edition of thenovel, publis...

Aha! She's a Grey-elf! ab- means 'after' in Sindarin. uilos is Simbelmynë, meaning 'everwhite', while uil is 'seaweed.' lû is an 'occasion,' while luin means 'blue' (I shouldn't have had to look that one up...) ia means 'pit,' as in Moria. So...poor Abulia fell into a pit after missing some m...

We agree in our observations, then, and disagree in our conclusions.
In my personal observation it's that very neighbourhood dynamics that originate from private property that prevent stability and are responsible for constant shift and change.
As is already expressed in the word 'dynamics'.

:D I'm glad you like 'bedight', and thank you for the explanations. The hours with RanHouUnAb, who seems to be of Arab extraction, have been well spent. I wouldn't use it in a modern translation, ms. hob. The "be" part we would understand, even if used uncommonly, as in "beholden"...

Re: Political Ideology Test

I'm 3 and 5 3) People are individuals and are generally rational and capable of making their own way in life, although everyone needs some assistance. They have a right to freedom, and tyranny and oppression is the worst situation that they can find themselves in. However, being in a disadvantaged s...

Thanks for sharing, Voronwë. So - do you actually understand anything he says? (I get like one word in ten. Also interesting how absent-minded he seems. Same in the clip about how he wrote the beginning of The Hobbit on the exam paper.) The Ring Verse reading is nice, though it's scarier when Christ...

Well, not a real contest where it's about choosing the 'best', just everybody who wants to play has to write a short story about Abulia, in whatever vein they prefer... 8)

Working on my poetry translation yesterday, I needed another word with the meaning of "adorn". Too lazy to think, I looked in the dictionary for 'schmücken' and got a long list including things like 'trim', 'embellish' - and also 'bedight'. It was marked obsolete, but as it was a 17th cent...

Lovely topic, Mossy, and good to see you again! :) I'm not sure where to start. Maybe by saying that I haven't read CoH yet (though I got the book recently - go me! ;) ), so I can't comment too much on Túrin. I would like to say several things at once, so this is probably going to be a bit confused,...

Luciano Pavarotti dead at 71

Luciano Pavarotti died yesterday in his house in Modena.

I think he'll undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest tenors of our times.
