I moved the discussion about the tables into the thread that I started dedicated to the tables. I might try to see if I can separate out the discussion about the edits to the female characters as well, since that is also a separate subject from the "theory of transmission" Edit: I did spl...

There's a reason why the book has only black and white illustrations. :)

As I said some back, it's rather a shame that most of Doug's technical work wound up compressed into the tables, for both space and copyright reasons, for it gives little impression of how the texts themselves line up; indeed, necessarily they focus on difference rather than congruence. I think the...

Has it ever wondered you why he put it aside to write LOTR? Though we are told, over and over again, that he regarded it as his "real work" and of much more importance than anything else he ever wrote? He could never be satisfied with it, writing it over and over, revising, polishing, hon...

Yes, and manipulating that research method is standard in the legal field. I've seen too many such analyses done by competing highly qualified experts that resulted in diametrically opposite conclusions to be anything but suspicious of such things. Sorry.

It can easily be done. The first step would be content analysis - which would give a ranking of the removed parts in terms of extent of removal, importance to story etc. Then we can simply add a dummy variable for "women character". A simple test to see if this variable is significant or ...

Well, at the risk of causing a few more bumps on vison's head (since I happen to know that she is a very tough lady), I'll venture one more brief response. But I am satisfied now that you do in fact understand, and accurately, precisely why I took strong exception to the first form of your claim, th...

Carl, I think I have answered you in the post that I made that you had not yet read when you made your last post as much as I am going to be able to answer you. I'll wait until you have had an opportunity to read and comment on that post before saying anything further.

(I remind everyone that Doug himself wrote at the start of this discussion that "I for one understand Carl's indignation. I certainly expected that to be the most controversial part of my book, and I'm sure that Carl won't be the only person upset about it." I've told you why I consider t...

Galin, I'm surprised that you considered the UT passage to be more significant that the LOTR Appendix A passages, particularly the one that was added in to the second edition. The UT passage is incredibly vague. All it says is that Galadriel and Celeborn "were about to seek leave from the Valar...

Does it have some bearing? I suppose so, to some extent. But I don't really see it as Christopher expanding the role of a female character. It was the final text that Tolkien wrote on the subject; it wasn't changed in any way by Christopher to expand Aredhel's role. Maeglin role is certainly expande...
