Who said anything about "over-emphasizing" WC/DG/Sauron plotlines? Um, Peter Jackson? ;) Arguably, any significant emphasis on those plot-lines would be over-emphasizing them. As for Legolas - since Thranduil is busy entertaining the Dwarves in his dungeons, and marching to Ereb...

There are a number of pitfalls that I see from over-emphasizing the White Council/Dol Guldur/Sauron plotline. The danger is that that battle is so much more important in the grand scheme of things than the battle of the five armies and everything that leads up to it. It risks making the Elvenking's ...

Great stuff, soli! Yet another example of how Tolkien wrote material and only later discovered what it really meant!

I reserve judgment. It's hard to see how it will maintain the feel of The Hobbit with such an emphasis on Sauron. Does Smaug merely become a servant of the Necromancer? That would change things radically.

Well, we'll see. They say that they are maintaining the "fun, young, fairytale-adventure mix" but it remains to be seen whether that will actually work, mixed in with things like developing Sauron's backstory. While the latter could be quite interesting, it's hard to see how it jives with ...

SPOILER IN CASE LADY DARKSTAR OR ANY OTHER FIRST TIME READER IS READING Frelga, I was thinking particularly of the Witchking's confrontation with Éowyn. Arguably up to the point that she bravely kills the fell beast, it could be argued that he is relying on that animals eyes for sight. But after sh...

You are most welcome, rwhen! As for the comment about the Riders using Men as spies in Bree, I don't see that as confirming that it was not the Riders themselves that attacked the Inn. Either way, it is clear that Ferny, Harry and the southerner were spies for the Riders (though of course to w...

Yeah. I could combine the two threads, but I don't think it would be worth the effort that it would take.

Since no one wants to talk about Aragorn's reciting the verses about Lúthien and Beren, and telling their story (which really surprises me), let talk about the actual attack on Weathertop, shall we?

Anyone?

In one of the most surprising 5-4 splits that we have seen for a long time, the Court has significantly added to the protection of individuals stopped for traffic violations. For 28 years, police have relied on the Court's ruling in New York v. Belton for the proposition that they cann search a susp...

Exactly, Dave. And so to tie this back to the topic of the thread, my hope is that the humour of the Hobbit films is more in line with Tolkien's sense of humour in the Hobbit book than PJ's sense of humour in the LOTR films.

But the whole point of that "gag" (if you want to call it that) is that he is this highly dignified (and even more highly arrogant) Dwarf who falls over Bilbo's doorstep with three other Dwarves falling on top of him because Bilbo jerked the door open so in annoyance and anger. I hardly th...

The Dwarves in general, yes, but I can't think of any instances in which Thorin himself does (although it has been a couple of years since I read The Hobbit). Can you point to any?

I really can't believe that it was a set up, simply because if it was widely known before this that she had such a great voice, it would have, well, been widely known that she had such a great voice.
