I recall commenting on this at the time, nerdanel , and, in passing, indicating that I disagree with the death penalty under any circumstances. At the time you wrote that entry I took the opportunity to read some of the (more in-depth than we were getting) US coverage of the Moussaoui trial, and was...

Speaking of the St Matthew Passion, I saw on TV (again, at Easter time) a little of a performance directed by Jonathan Miller, which was in modern dress, and, more or less, acted out. Apparently it has been performed live this way numerous times. This site has some details about that. What impressed...

Thanks Di for opening this thread. The last concert I went to (just before Easter) was of the St Matthew Passion, and it was a highly emotional experience for a number of reasons, not least the sheer beauty in the lines of the music. I’m not overly familiar with Brahms 1st Piano Concerto, but ...

It’s an interesting co-incidence, but our Liberal party is proposing that people wishing to take out citizenship should pass a basic English test first. (However, applicants over 50 would be exempt.) Apparently this will the case in the UK too, from November. I am hoping that, if adopted, this does ...

Beautiful description Di. It sparked my own memories of an English Spring, 14 years ago. I have never seen so many daffodils in my entire life.

I cannot understand the impulses which would cause someone to inflict such harm on a defenceless animal, or human being. However, the suffering itself is all to easy to understand, and it's the absence of that ability to feel sympathy which characterises the perpetrators. There is detachment, and th...

Is that Lake Louise, Eruname? The reflections are just beautiful!

And this is for Athrabeth - it's a poinsettia bushwhich is leaning up against a neighbour's fence threatening to push it over:

The first live opera I ever saw was - not suprisingly - The Marriage of Figaro. To be honest, opera is not my favourite musical form, and apart from Mozart's operas, and also Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande, I'd probably elect to spend my concert pennies elsewhere. But Figaro was brilliant live. :) I...

We have a Bridal Veil falls too! They drop over Govett’s Leap (Govett=early surveyor, Leap=Welsh word for fall*) in the Blue Mountains just to the west of Sydney, and falls 180m down to its second level. It’s the biggest/longest/best in the … whole of the Blue Mountains. :) http://img.photobucket.co...

Mozart! I’ve just bought ‘Mozart’s Letters, Mozart’s Life’, so I’ll share the fun as much as I can. The work I love best, but can no longer listen to is the Requiem. Already heartwrenching, it has become just about unbearable due to its association with a friend of mine who died in his early 30s. On...

I think that Mrs Bennet is very similar to Lydia in temperament, Queen_Beruthiel. Like you, I had imagined that Mrs B was pretty, vivacious thing who flirted a huge amount, and that Mr B was young, impressionable, perhaps even a little shy, and didn’t stand a chance against a determined matrimonial ...

Eru - the colours in that picture are wonderful! Where was it taken? vison - you are very lucky to have mountains just outside your back door (more or less.) Anth - that is a very stark, and beautiful, arrangement of rock. Impressive! My offering today is a little more humble - the contents of a ro...

Mahima - that's a terrific picture of the Twelve Apostles. The light is so bright! Sadly Apostle numbers are diminishing due to erosion - I think there are only 8 left now. Voronwë - the colours of that sunset burn into your soul, don't they. And I love the shape of the tree silhouetted against it....

That is a very elegantly shaped mushroom, Hobby. It has the lines of an Art Deco vase or something like that. Mossy, the aurora pictures are fantastic. I would dearly love to see the northern - or the southern - lights. Ro, shooting Narnia in Poland in Winter may have added realism, but it probably ...

Can I post now? Because I see I’ve arrived just in time for Mr Collins, and I've been sitting on my hands for the past couple of days waiting for Alatar and Padme, but it’s so hard to resist! :D In most cases in P&P we build our understanding of a character by hearing what they say and seeing wh...
