Ì agree that neither should come back. But hoping for it and believing it are two different things. Something is not right with Dumbledore's "death". I already explained about the inconsistent Avada Kedavra, but also there's the issue of Fawkes. We know Fawkes is a Phoenix and can be rebor...

Well, whatever she may have said, she's left an awful lot of "hooks". Sirius conveniently being knocked behind the veil. Dumbledore getting thrown over the parapet out of sight and being basically ignored for a good 10 minutes. I don't buy it. Besides every other Avada Kedavra spell had th...

SW, there's no question but that the "Flat World" Mythos is the accepted reality. The discussion here (I think) is whether it could have worked just as well with a round world. I believe it could, and would be improved by that concept. Others disagree.

I'm also in the "Snape acting for good" camp. I'm also 100% convinced that Dumbledore is not dead. How that affects the unbreakable curse I dunno. Maybe he did die and Fawkes brought him back somehow. Trust me on this one. Something happened to Dumbledore while his "body" was out...

Ok. Imagine a World, globed in the abyss. There are no stars, no sun, no moon. The Ainur enter and shape this world to their liking and Melkor destroys and corrupts what they create. In the Continental Mass of what is now Europe they raise the two great Lamps, Illuin and Ormal, to bring light to the...

I'm a huge fan of both Howe and Lee. Possibly my favourite depiction of Orcs is Howes image of the Orcs from the 1987 calendar. Here it is Also, Howes depiction of the Ford of Bruinen is magnificent: At the Ford I also adore his depiction of Smaug: Death of Smaug All of these were pre-PJ but I love ...

But they're not "problems", Al! The great, overriding theme IMHO of the myth that connects the Sil and LOTR is loss: death and immortality, "embalming" and preserving, fading and renewing, the long defeat, hope without guarantee....all are tied to this central idea. In the "...

I will respond Voronwë, when I have time, but unfortunately the discussion has been split so I'll have to reference both threads in my answer, which makes it more confusing.

I'll accept the Discworld in Pratchett, but not in Tolkien. But it’s not a “discworld”. As a matter of fact, I think referring to it as a “flat world” is really not indicative of its form at all. Looking at the diagram in my first post, with the great “veins of the world” reaching down towards the ...

Sass, Ath, if you read back I've already proposed a solution that neatly solves both problems. However, since none seem to recognise it's validity, I won't repeat it ad nauseum.

Silmarillion is in the top pic between LotR Single Volume Hardback and Hobbit 50th Anniversary Edition. It's just a plain H/B copy. The Illustrated one is by Ted Nasmith and I'm not really a fan of his work.

And Tolkien would have liked Clapton's later stuff

Ah, the bookshelf! Funnily enough, sorting out the Display cabinet also resulted in a knock-on effect of reorganising my bookshelf. First is the main shelf. My Hardback collection of Tolkien books. Starting with the Alan Lee Illustrated Centenary Box Set that I won from TORN for running a Line Party...

And I think Tolkien understood the power of a poetic, "unexplained vista". The Prof was not above saying something "just cause it sounded cool", although I doubt he would have used those words to describe it. Ath, of course Middle-earth can't be accurately tied to our history, bu...

Ah, but V, if that were so, why would the Professor have spent so much time ensuring that the cycles of the moon were correct and cognisant with modern lunar activity. Surely any alterations sould have been explained by Tilions waywardness and his attraction to Arien. Why the need to tie them so acc...

Oh don't worry! Future installments will cover some of what you've mentioned. You will be delighted with PJ by the time I'm finished. Even his botched Éowyn and the WitchKing is better than the Cowboy Shebop version we get in Rankin Bass. Really. As for Denethor of the Eyebrow....
