Blows to the head are always injurious. Without exception. The head protection worn by boxers is a sad joke. Hockey and football players wear much sturdier helmets and still suffer brain damage. Some people seem to be able to "take it" more, but then - look at Sidney Crosby. One of the gre...

The judging in boxing has been a disgrace for decades. Even in these supposedly squeaky clean Games there have been several appallingly bad decisions and one, at least, was overturned. I also think boxing should just be banned outright, from the Olympics to the professional ring. No "sport"...

Great Olympians? Canadian Clara Hughes, the only Olympian ever to win medals at both the Summer and Winter games. An amazing athlete and a very nice woman, to boot. 1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze. As for "what makes an athlete"? Well, I remember when the IOC said that curlers couldn't be Olymp...

I agree that there is plently of blame to go around, but I saw some of the footage of one of the matches and I literally was almost sick. I had to turn it off. That is not what the Olympics is about. What struck me was that the Olympics official said, "That's not what people pay for." Oh?...

I agree with halplm that PJ didn't make LOTR just the way I would have, :P but I can still enjoy reading the book. On the other hand, I haven't read The Hobbit more than maybe 10 times and it is not fixed in my memory the way LOTR is - I've read LOTR at least 100 times, so it's worn grooves in my br...

In that sense, Mr. Romney reminds me of Mr. Bush. However, I don't think it will hurt him in the US. I don't think many Americans care what other people think of their president - indeed, I often get the feeling they are rather proud that an American president is unpopular abroad, proving that he pu...

C'mon vison. Make a thread in Lasto for how much you hate the Games. Let us have our thread here to enjoy it. I won't say any more. :) On the other hand: it's hard not to be moved and amazed by someone like Jody Schloss, a disabled equestrian, who is competing in the Paralympics: http://www.ottawac...

I love the spirit of sportsmanship and fellowship so amply demonstrated by the Lebanese Olympic team: they refused to practice next to the Israeli team. And of course, the courageous IOC told the Lebanese team to honour the Olympic ideal or go home. No . . . wait. That's not what happened. The IOC e...

I still think The Rock would have made a splendid John Carter. When I am rich, I'll remake it. And then I'll remake LOTR.

Watch for it.

Some years ago a friend (an internet friend, but I've met her in real life) told me she was getting married: to another woman. To say I was shocked is an understatement, since I had no clue at all. None. But mutual friends were not surprised, I guess they picked up clues that escaped me. But here's ...

You guyz ought to read this: http://www.ajjacobs.com/books/yolb.asp It's a very good book. (I've lost count of how many straight women in my age group I've met who say that they would really be interested in dating a woman - and can see substantial advantages to having a female rather than male part...

Good for John McCain, pointing out that Ms. Michelle Bachman has lowered the tone of the Congress and demeaned honourable citizens!

I tend to agree. I don't know how it's done in the US, but politicians here often put their holdings into a blind trust. That forestalls any such controversy as Mr. Romney is facing. The tax returns? I am one of millions who would like to know what's in there. And what isn't. Considering that Mr. Ob...
