Imp, I understand what you are saying very well, but then, I have a very similar perspective.

I've been resisting posting this since this thread was started, but I can resist no longer. The truth is, there is no such thing as "The Ideal Life". Arda IS marred, and each of us with it. Bad things happen that we have no control over. And we all make the wrong decisions some time, no ma...

One of the things that makes Tolkien's Arda so amazing and engulfing is it's vastness -- knowing too much about it makes it less vast. I disagree. :) To me, Tolkien's universe is so vast it is virtually limitless. The more I have read and thought about his work, the more vast that it seems. The mor...

I've been wanting for some time to say a bit about the 'Tale of Adanel' and to try to put it in context. To summarize, in this Tale, before the early Humans ever experienced Death, they heard a Voice (that of Eru), but it refused to answer their questions, basically saying "don't try to grow up...

The Wanderings of Húrin is probably the only part of the entire HoME that gives additional detail on the level of LOTR, or of something like the Narn (which in many ways it is a continuation of). I think it is a really fascinating glimpse into both the Brethil community after the time of Túrin, and...

Also, these days the ethnic joking I hear is aimed at one's own group. I have no memory of the last time I heard someone I was with in real life (as opposed to a comedian or a character in a film) tell an ethnic joke that was not aimed squarely at the teller's own group. Just today I received a voi...

Thanks for the reply, Hobby. :)

It is unfortunate that this idiocy obscures a very serious and difficult issue. I wondered briefly if Mayor Nagin's remarks were being quoted drastically out of context, and whether he was responding to speculation that poor, African-American residents would be disproportionately displaced during th...

Thanks for the tip, Scirocco! I've always secretly assumed that it had to be the Nazgûl. :) I guess I'll have to purchase that book. It looks very good. But so scholarly. I worry that it will dilute the magic of Middle-earth. But then, Christopher's work never did that for me. I remember when UT fir...

This is the type of thing that I was talking about of Tolkien relating back to a previous statement to close a loop. It may not be to your taste, Hobby, but I like it. :)

The poetry is dreadful and could have been left out without any damage to the story, as a matter of fact, that would have been an improvement. Correction. Most of the poetry is dreadful, but some of it is utterly brilliant. I love, for instance, Galadriel's lament (I sang of leaves, of leaves of go...

Yes, that is Yosemite Falls, at 2,425 feet tall widely thought of as the tallest waterfall in the United States. Its not, of course, but its still beautiful. :)
