Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

So here's a question I'm seeing raised: can a PM just start the exit clock rolling by him or herself, or as an exit from a treaty, does it require an Act of Parliament?

a gut-level "feeling" about her honesty/trustworthiness/integrity which is not going to stand up to much of a debate here I have that too. And yet I cannot shake the feeling I have it at least in part because I was meant to have it by powerful people who fear and loathe her, going back to...

Re: 2016 United States Election

people shouldn't be maligned because their conscience tells them something different than yours tells you.
Unless, you know, they vote for Nazis or something. All consciences might be created equal, but some people are really bad about going in for oil changes.

Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

One thing I think needs to be recognized by all parties involved is that globalization--really the crux of all the non-racist Leave arguments--is by its nature politically problematic. Its benefits are incremental and diffuse, while its costs are sudden and concentrated. It's a sort of reverse lott...

Re: 2016 United States Election

You mean in 1980, Prim. Trust me, I voted for Anderson, too--my first Presidential election. I never voted for Reagan, but I did vote GOP in a number of specific cases, back when I was pretty apolitical: Jack Danforth for the Senate (before the Thomas fiasco) and Kit Bond (when he was an honest-to-...

He says he would reevaluate established relationships, hints that he would be less interventionist, and would have a less dangerous attitude towards Russia. This week. If there's anything worse in diplomacy than bad policy, it's capricious policy, and Trump is the poster man-child for saying and do...

Re: Gun Control Debate

Out of interest, is there anything stopping Obama from signing an executive order banning assault weapons? I feel like some of those words should be capitalised, but I can't figure out which ones or why... It's that whole separation of powers thing the U.S. is burdened/blessed with; as the Supreme ...

Re: Gun Control Debate

Regulation isn't punishment. One might as well say people in Connecticut are punished for living there by being unable to purchase AR-15s or similar semiautomatic weapons with large capacity magazines. ETA: I should add, though, that I find the use of the no-fly list in its current form extremely p...

Re: Gun Control Debate

The Senate (and the House) were given the ability to set their own rules in Article One, Section Five of the Constitution. That includes things like the cloture threshold. It's an open question as to whether the authors of the Constitution would approve of *this* rule in particular.

Re: Gun Control Debate

Guns form a handy bridge between two otherwise irreconcilable aspects of working class life for many rural and suburban white people in the post-industrial age: a real lack of power and a inculcated sense of superiority. I blame Calvinism.

Man of Steel isn't the same without the big Dolby speakers in the theater turned up to chest-squeezing volume.

Not saying that's a bad thing.

It's pretty clear that Luke is being set up to serve in the mentor role occupied first by Obi-Wan and then Yoda in the original trilogy. I wouldn't worry about him overshadowing the new characters.

Re: When is PC too PC?

What V-man and tinwë said. I've been reading Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me in small doses, both because it hurts too much to read all at once, and because I'm afraid I'll skim over the hardest parts if I do that. It's as bleak and honest an account of the racial situation in the U.S. ...

Re: When is PC too PC?

Murder and war are, alas, universals. Every culture has to deal with them. Not every culture has had to deal with being enslaved, and there's an unfortunate tendency for those that have to remain oppressed, or at least disadvantaged, many years after the legal shackles come off. A little sensitivit...
