So far as I am aware, McCain doesn't reveal information on contributors below that threshold either. If that is not true, I would be interested in seeing a link that demonstrates that.

Exactly. Well said.

Verlyn Flieger once answered the question "whose myth is it?" by saying it is the myth of whoever happens to be speaking at that moment. That is, perhaps, one of Tolkien's greatest achievements.

I agree, Tom. It truly is remarkable how successfully Tolkien has managed to simulate a real mythology, complete with competing versions of tales. We never would have had the opportunity to appreciate that without Christopher's massive efforts. My friend Jason Fisher made a very apt comparison in a ...

But "posts that echo partisan talking points of the day"? If you don't hang out at partisan sites, how are you to know whether the point you want to make is a talking point? And if it is a talking point, does that necessarily mean it is not worth talking about? If you don't hang out at pa...

Frelga, I am fairly confident that everyone knew that you were not suggesting that biting the heads off kittens was in any way okay. Okay, more than fairly confident. Confidently confident.

Regarding Powell, Obama has stated that he will have a role in his administration (if he wins), even if it is just as an advisor. He also said that Powell has an open invitation to show up at any campaign stop. Regarding his campaign strategy, it appears that it is not the swing states he is taking ...

Difficult to answer, sf, because I have never been involved in that type of thing. But I would do whatever it took to ensure that the endemic problems (which began in previous elections, so it should not be a surprise to ACORN), were eliminated. In all likelihood, an effort to vet the workers would ...

Kindness and fairness, sure, but in a political discussion, critical thinking should not be left out the door for the sake of being nice. Or vice versa. Nobody is asking that critical thinking be sacrificed for niceness, Frelga. In fact, what I would like to see is MORE critical thinking, rather th...

There really is remarkably little to say about the history of this chapter. There is some preliminary sketching that indicates that the hobbits first encounter with Tom Bombadil was supposed to be brief, and that they would not be his guests until after their escape from the Barrow. Christopher indi...

Actually, Holby, Obama brought in an astounding $150 million in September. That is truly mind-boggling. Thanks, Cerin, for the clarification. Perhaps it is true, but it just seems strange to me, when Obama's campaign has been so savvy and disciplined so far, that they would make would really does se...

Cerin, from where have you gotten that impression (that Obama is pulling resources from swing states)? The sense that I have gotten is that he is so flush with cash that he can afford to go after these normally "red" states without sacrificing his efforts in the all-important swing states....

I can't help but wonder whether, if Obama wins, Powell will have a role in his administration. Not as a quid pro quo for endorsing, but because Obama genuinely respects him and believes he would have something to offer.

The reports I have read indicated that he said he will not be doing any campaigning for Obama. I wouldn't expect that he would. I was particularly pleased to see Powell say this: Powell also said he was “troubled” by Republican personal attacks on Obama, especially false intimations that Obama was M...

Sir V, my first inclination would be to say that I have said all I can think to say on a subject like that. But as history has proved time and again, I really, really do seem to always have one more thing to say. ;) I'm not sure how much more I have to say on the subject, either, my friend, but I a...

Colin Powell has, in fact, endorsed Obama for president, calling him a transformational figure who was better able to deal with the economy, and to restore America's standing in the world. He also, apparently, expressed displeasure with the negative tone of McCain's campaign, and with his choice of ...
