I daresay most Norwegians are opposed to a "circus", and who wouldn't be? I look at my 2 boys and think what it would be like if they had been part of that group. They could be. Cousins of ours could have been. I've said before and I'll say again: even this beast is entitled to a Fair Tria...

My youngest son is going to be in Oslo during this trial, or at least part of it. He's going to be staying with relatives. He's going to be there for a shooting match - many of his fellow competitors will be military and police from all over Europe. I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say ...

I can't speak for Norway, but in America "due process" does not require allowing a defendant to assert a defense that does not exist. I agree that even the worst of the worst alleged criminals need to be given every opportunity to avail themselves of the judicial process, including compet...

ETA I believe "self defence" has been used as justification for pre-emptive strikes, has it not? Yes, it has, and yes, it was wrong then and the strikers should have been brought to justice. By whom? And where and when? But that's got nothing to do with this case. He's a poisonous creep, ...

I'm not talking about "summary justice", I'm with Lord_M on this, it's going to be a circus. "Self-defense" is a pretty clear term and I can see no reason at all for it to be changed to "the government is trying to destroy Norway so I had to murder all those kids". The ...

There is no punishment adequate for Brevik. I read today that he is claiming "self-defense" against a multicultural government colluding to destroy Norway. He is - supposedly - going to be allowed to call extremist Muslims and others to support his case. It's beyond me. He should be tried ...

Insofar as Job sets trusting God and trusting in religion at odds, perhaps no one wanted to queer the pitch as it were by ascribing the words to anyone in particular? I find this extremely plausible. Although it's plunked down with Proberbs and Psalms, Job is a far, far more high-stakes book than e...

Thanks, Lalaith. I don't have time to respond at length, but I will say this: I think that animal or blood sacrifice arose from the importance that meat had to our very early ancestors. When you hunt for meat, you have one set of "rules" about it - most meat hunters would make some ritual ...

Paul Tibbets?

You're kidding, right? Why would you drag that name into this thread?

Whatever observations you might have otherwise made about Brevik have been rendered meaningless after that.

It isn't necessary for my peace of mind to wrestle the contradictions - or what I see as contradictions - into a unified and cohesive set of beliefs. But it must surely be necessary for someone who is a Christian. nerdanel expresses much of what I think on the matter, but I am sincerely interested i...

The Resurrection

This is something I would like to discuss. Not the resurrection itself, that's just the name of the thread. I wonder what would have happened if Jesus had not been killed? His life and death seemed - to me - to carry out God's plan. Jesus, we are told, took upon himself the sins of us all, and paid ...

I saw this somewhere else and was quite impressed by it. Some of the Venuses (sp?) were much different, but others not so much.

I liked some of the old ones better and then I liked some of the new ones better.

The old standard of beauty seemed more "realistic", of course.

Googled it. OK: there is one book that is listed dozens of times: The History of Circumcision from the Earliest Times to the Present, it was written years ago by an American doctor - who was, apparently, the Dr. Kellogg of circumcision. A weirdo, in other words. Here is an article I found interestin...
