News that she's adopted still leaves the possibility that her and Legolas are romantically inclined, in spite of their previous denials. Assuming she dies (leaving no thread left hanging), such a back story would satisfy any pedestrian urge to explain Legolas' utter devotion to Aragorn in later inst...

Saw a newish trailer last night at Thor. In spite of looking nothing like "The Hobbit," the clips looked pretty good, exceptional really. There was no sign of Smaug's head in this one, but some body shots, and quite a bit of his voice. (excerpted from my TORn post) I freely admit that my a...

A Bad Day here's another devotional from the series called Holy Land Moments . It too is timely... A Bad Day October 21, 2013 “Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep ov...

Or maybe there really isn't any romance between them. It wouldn't be the first time that a trailer gave a misleading impression. [Edit: cross-posted with Dave] Meanwhile, it occurs to me that there doesn't seem to be any indication that Bilbo is wearing the Ring when we see him in Erebor, other tha...

I was thinking a non-traditional Yeti perhaps. A bit blonde though.

Forgot to mention, Narya's 'fishes' is lovely.

V was it very dry there? It looks dry. Such different impressions of how I've imagined (and seen in photographs) Yosimite. Mountains here in the east are ancient and worn down, while this place looks relatively new. Also, when you're looking at the tops of trees you know you're high. (Is that someon...

We figured "Bear Island" might be an island, but there were no bears there for sure. This may be a bit of folk wisdom, but I've heard in bear country it's safer to camp on islands than mainland because bears tend to avoid islands... something about not wanting to be trapped on a relativel...

Sir D, that is very kind, although I don't think I would go that far. Some of the hiking that we did on this trip was in the Ansel Adams Wilderness (after crossing over from the John Muir Wilderness). As you probably know, Ansel Adams built his career on making landscape photographs with large form...

For a time immediately following the making of Jackson's LOTR I thought it would be nice if CT et al were more free with the licensing of their patriarch's work. Since seeing what Jackson's Hobbit has become (and/or where it seems to be headed), and given the liberties taken with license granted so ...

What surprised me most -- I know you are more familiar with this than many -- is the clarity and brilliance of Christopher Tolkien's voice. His essays easily are among the best I've read on the subject of Arthurian Legend, surpassing even several of the introductions and "notes on the text"...

Mine has a manuscript page... Here are my thoughts moved from the list sticky: "The Fall of Arthur" by J.R.R.Tolkien , ed. Christopher Tolkien. Harper Collins, 2013. I picked this up within a few days of its publication date, during Whitsuntide 2013. (As I noted on TORn around that time, i...
