But plenty of people on the left were saying similar things, especially if they were Clinton supporters. And I don't think they were necessarily off base. I don't think that is true, Prim. The vast majority of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party supported Obama over Clinton, and many were ...

I think Krugman has a lot of good things to say, and his ideas are worth listening to (among others). I also think that he is very full of himself. It's interesting that no one seems to remember just how insulting and dismissive he was about Obama (and those of us who were early supporters of Obama)...

I think Krugman is just a bit too full of himself to be taken too seriously.

I heard in an interview this morning, that Christina, the subject of the above painting, suffered from polio and literally was crawling across the farm. Definitely a very moving portrait of the human condition.

No, don't. But that shouldn't stop you from vigorously correcting him (I'm assuming that this is a "him"; it sure sounds like it :halo: ). After all, we don't want crackpot theories (or worse, the views of David Day) to go uncontested in a public forum.

Shiny Grand Rapids furniture?  This is a scene of comfort, homely, domestic comfort, with hobbits eating their comfort food ("half an hour's steady going, without unnecessary interruptions.") It is, of course, the Hobbits last good meal until they reach Rivendell, almost a ...

Book 1, Chap. 9: At the Sign of the Prancing Pony

This chapter begins with a long, matter-of-fact description of Bree and the surrounding Bree-land, complete with a bit of the history of its big and little people. It seems to me that this is the first real introduction of Frodo and his companions to the outside world. The Old Forest, Tom's house, a...

Re: Shooting down a crackpot theory about Beorn's origins

What nonsense! First of all, Beren never "changed to beast form." He simply was (by the arts of Lúthien) "arrayed now in the hame of Draugluin." Then, after Lúthien put Morgoth to sleep, Beren "cast aside the wolf-hame." To suggest that that is indication that he was th...

First of all, the new administration has already announced that they are keeping the existing White House chef, Cristeta Comerford.

Secondly, is it really necessary to start a thread about this here in Lasto? You really don't need to start a new thread about every new topic that pops into your head.

Here is one prominent Washington insider's take on the inauguration: "I have the same feeling that I think many Americans have, that it's really remarkable that -- what we're going to do here in a few days is swear in the first African American president of the United States. When I came to tow...
