Hehe, the snow at Easter pic really quite cured the jealousy of the lovely September pic - mostly cloudy here, and even if the sun comes out, and you go out, you get a nasty surprise by how chilly it is.
Both your kid and your kitty, vison?

Didn't Hardy set the showdown in Tess at Stonehenge? Wow, I had no idea there were over a thousand years in the making of Stonehenge. I tend to feel that English landscape mostly has something gentle and friendly, too, although there seem to be wild places as well - I've just not been there. ;) I th...

That does not mean I am certain of much inside the realm of words, or that I think I know exactly what God likes for breakfast. Or likes ME to have for breakfast. Or what the afterlife is like. Or how long it really took God to make the beasts and the plants. But that's beside the point for me. I t...

Get a room, you two! ;) Again, I still very much agree with Cerin as to the meaning of certainty and humility. But I'm thinking that maybe there's a different idea of what constitutes 'doubt' behind the disagreement? Because, Frelga, you say that your faith gives you joy. But if you were not certain...

Why does the rest of the world have to wait to have the US do something in Darfur? Can't some countries band together, use collective funds and troops and do something besides a peace keeping mission? I don't really mean to speak for the rest of the world, but, as Ath said, I've never heard anyone ...

You're not getting in trouble, Prim (at least over here). I'm just saying that I don't understand why one would make the jump from learning that someone is not struggling with doubt to suspecting they are likely to be smug or prone to hurting others. I think it's wrong to suspect something so negati...

Alatar, are naive and reprehensible the same, then? It's up to everybody, of course, to find someone who doesn't doubt naive - that just reflects your personal opinion and judgement - but reprehensible is a different class of condemnation, I think. Prim, I wasn't objecting to your first post, I quit...

That still doesn't justify a derogatory attitude (using Cerin's words here) towards someone who has not been prey to those doubts, nor does an absence of doubt justify concluding that the person must be smug or feeling superior, I think. This reminded me of our recent discussion in the Random though...

Two Terry Pratchett's - both written for children . A Tiffany Aching one - Wintersmith I didn't know that was written for children. There was a sample chapter of it at the end of my copy of Thud, and I was just surprised how weak the writing seemed to be - I put it down to it being co-written with ...

I so agree about Julie Christie's looks. :D (Haven't seen Far from the Madding Crowd, though.) I remember Polanski's Tess, I quite liked it at the time. It was my first contact with anything by Hardy, so it was also Tess that I chose for my first reading anything by Hardy - hate it with a passion, I...

A while ago I posted about reading The Once and Future King. I took a break after finishing the first book, and have now started The Witch in the Wood. Is it just me not being used to descriptions of violence or was anyone else shocked about the scene of boiling a live cat? (Of course, I rea...

I think it's been found that many things the mother does during pregnancy already shape the future human - so it would seem that we are not entirely a 'tabula rasa' at birth. However, this concept, IMO, is one of the most beneficial findings in the development of Western thought. The question is usu...

But if you've got green ones, that's a good start, isn't it? Season isn't over yet. :) But if all else fails, you can harvest them green, and either use them as green tomatoes, or leave them to ripen indoors, which they usually do. We've got six tomato plants, and another one or two ripe on each of ...
