Re: 2016 United States Election
And Cerin, you may not believe that it was actually plagiarism, but when the speech is run through a common tool used at high schools and colleges (Turnitin - we used it at my IB school in Zambia) it fails miserably. I think it is interesting to see the graph of the "problem areas." http:/...

Re: 2016 United States Election
I'd say it's more like "Don't vote Trump because (amongst other reasons) he is completely unable to take criticism of any kind or admit to making even simple mistakes, which is one of the many signs of his dangerously extreme narcissism, and his poor response to his wife's plagiarism is yet an...

Re: 2016 United States Election
I'd say what it shows is Mrs. Trump's political naïveté. I daresay she won't take initiative again without clearing her plans with someone. ...I very much don't think it's a "sign" of anything. I think that theTrump campaign's response to it is more of a "sign" than anything els...

Re: 2016 United States Election
David Frum, conservative political commentator and speechwriter for President George W. Bush, thinks the fiasco over Melania Trump's speech last night is much more important than it would appear - he details why in the article below. But here is the heart of his argument - "Confronted with this...

Re: 2016 United States Election
...if a speechwriter was stupid enough to review past speeches and lift a portion of one with so little effort at disguise, I would expect him to be quickly unemployed, wouldn't you? So has anyone been fired yet? Not yet. But it's early days... It makes me want to go out and vote for Trump, out of ...

Re: 2016 United States Election
It's not a rip off. These are basic platitudes and cliches that every candidate uses. No one owns the idea that: Our parents pass on their values to us, and we want to pass our values on to our children. It's good to keep your word, work hard, and treat people with respect. We can achieve our dream...

Re: The Fellowship of the Ring in Concert
I saw Fellowship with live accompaniment (and a pre-movie talk by Howard Shore) and I saw the LOTR Symphony on Atlanta, conducted by Shore! Both were fantastic! Go!

Re: 2016 United States Election
Trump has "deliberately" insulted and alienated many different groups of voters, including the ones yov mentioned above. His ability to insult and ridicule various groups and individuals seemingly knows no bounds. His goal (IMHO) is to get attention. When he tweets his various insults he g...

Re: Gun Control Debate
My son has a gun and takes monthly classes. He enjoys shooting and he has a concealed carry license. He is a very responsible gun-owner. Guns are locked up, ammo is in a completely separate location, etc. He has also stated that he believes that the NRA is a "terrorist organization" and th...

Re: 2016 United States Election
The GOP has moved so far to the Extreme Right that Hillary seems to represent what the GOP *used to* stand for and Bernie is more like a good old-fashioned Democrat. Or at least, what a Democrat *used to* be. I dislike Hillary; she's a hawk (IMHO) and I think she'd steamroll over anyone to get what ...

Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns
C_G, that is the explanation from the few people I know who voted "leave." That the short-term result might be chaotic, but in the long-term, it would be beneficial to the UK. Maybe they're right. But I still feel that the decision to leave is an unfortunate one. Sent from my iPad using Ta...

Re: 2016 United States Election
But maybe this political race is more like a baseball game, where no matter what, you get your last inning and anything...ANYTHING...can happen. Even with the home team down by 7 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Re: 2016 United States Election
I root for Sanders for two reasons. 1. He's a lot more honest than the average politician. Although I disagree with his economics I know he means what he says. And he's not a hawk and he's not all that fond of our wars, although he's not as against them as I would like... An interesting thing about...

Re: Casablanca
I showed "Casablanca" to my 7th grade class last year - we had been doing a brief unit on National Anthems and I had shown them the famous scene ("Play La Marseillaise! Play it!") and they were very taken with it and wanted to see the entire film. So, at the end of the year, we w...
