I'm not going to get into the whole "Gates is evil" convo, but my distaste for Microsoft is one of the reasons I use a Mac at home.

These choices made by Time are not the best to make among philanthropists, that's for sure.

I do not think the article Meneltarma linked to is a good article. I think it is a polite rant. The thesis of the article appears to be that people must compartmentalize religion, and I don’t agree with this at all. I believe the author is using the point that no one should be forced to celebrate Ch...

A creative and thoughtful post, Jn. Really spectacular. I don't know what else to say about it, really. If Éowyn had not been "disobedient", I don't think I would even give her character a second thought. I suppose technically what she does can be called "desertion", but to me de...

She follows the man she does love: her surrogate father, and through defending him (in vain: he still buys it) gains, not the death she seeks, but new life, true glory, and .. redemption? No, not redemption. I think Éowyn redeems herself in the houses of healing. I do not think redemption is partic...

Yes, I thought I remembered something like that. In fact, there's a whole thing in the appendix of LOTR. I'll edit it in here in a bit. edit: On second, thought, maybe it's not necessary. The language of orcs is ranging a bit far from the subject of this thread, perhaps. Anywhere, there's a whole pa...

What are orc languages like? Are there any stories behind those words? It doesn't seem likely. Where do orc languages come from, anyway? I suppose they were invented by Morgoth or Sauron ... perhaps made in mockery of true languages. Formed by taking a true language and wringing all life out of it u...

Now the entire earth was of one language and uniform words. 2 And it came to pass when they traveled from the east, that they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly"; so the bricks were to ...

I'm going to start in this thread with a few scattered thoughts. In Iran, are people free to practice Islam? How can they be, if they are not free to practice Christianity? If they are not free to leave Islam at all? Christianity in the United States is threatened when people feel pressure not to be...

Following the winding way up the green shoulders of the hills, they came at last to the wide wind-swept walls and the gates of Edoras. There sat many men in bright mail, who sprang at once to their feet and barred the way with spears. "Stay, strangers here unknown!" they cried in the tong...

I don't think the qualifications for a "nature poem" need to be too strict. And I believe a thread goes where it naturally goes ...

I am fascinated by this whole "young people don't understand poetry" theme that has taken hold here. I'm afraid I don't quite understand it.

The poetry of nature

Both the unmarred earth and poetry may yield surprising beauty with unexpected motion and juxtaposition. There is a thread dedicated to the prose words of nature, and I believe there should be a separate thread devoted to the poetry of nature. I offer two short and raw poems I have written in Afrika...

Voronwë, this is a fascinating post. I have something to say, though I am afraid it is not as responsive as your post deserves ... but this is where my thoughts take me at the moment. The Shibboleth is a symbol of language as a divider. But language is how we communicate with each other, one way we ...

Thank you for the welcome, Sass and Jn and Voronwë . I am not at all sure I will be posting here in the short-term future, to be honest.
