To whom do the rights pass after CJRT is no longer with us? The rights are held by the Tolkien Estate, n'est pas? So the title 'High King of Tolkiendom' will fall to whomever is next in line. Hopefully the bloodline is pure or there may be civil war. Would this work as a series along the lines of G...

Okay, Lali, one more for you (thank Eru!) Apparently Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly has been hired to play Dain! I just saw this posted on TORN. This is the first casting that I've been genuinely excited about. (Not that I'm unhappy about the other actors who have been cast, just that t...

I had seen this little film linked on another messageboard. I rather like it. It reminds me of the cartoons I watched back in the 1960s when I was a lad.

It's faithfulness, or lack of the same, to Tolkien's story is quite another topic, however. :er:

I did not know that you were still playing, Alatar. Considering that no one had responded to the last three posts that I had made in the 'Move' thread I had my doubts. Between family, work, and performing (with undoubtedly lots of rehearsal) I figured you had precious little time to devote to a sill...

I don't mind being made uncomfortable, not that this essay had that effect on me. It's good to stimulate the little grey cells every now and again. :D I would post more often if I thought anyone were interested in my adventures in Middle-earth via Lord of the Rings Online. See the thread Move to Mid...

The article starts with these "facts": What do we know about Tom Bombadil? He is fat and jolly and smiles all the time. He is friendly and gregarious and always ready to help travellers in distress. Except that anyone who is familiar with Bombadil beyond a few superficial assumptions knows...

I've had the opportunity to read Letter 52. The first thing that struck me was the tone of the letter. It very much strikes me that Tolkien was angry. Angry that governments conduct these awful wars, and now his 18-year old son has been thrust into it, presumably against his will. As others have not...

I just read through this thread for the first time. As often happens as I go through life, a song came to my mind: Those were the days Boy the way Glen Miller played, songs that made the hit parade, guys like us we had it made, those were the days, and you know where you were then, girls were girls ...

Re: Mythcon 42

It sounds like you made a very nice connection, Voronwë. :) ...and the final paper was an interesting comparison between Abraham in the Old Testament and Aulë. I presume this was in regards to the passage below? As a child to his father, I offer to thee these things, the work of the hands which thou...

Well, it's a little more complicated than that, actually. Yes, the Road to Middle-earth was originally published first, but it has been significantly revised twice since then... Yes, I understand that it was revised and expanded in 2003 after The History of Middle-earth came out which provided grea...

I've read them both 3 or so times, and recommend them highly. If you can only purchase one, buy The Road to Middle-earth. Promise yourself to purchase Author of the Century when you are able. Why that order? Primarily, because that's the order in which they were published.

I've read the Sil a half dozen times and it never gets any easier. Have you tried studying the family trees in the back of the book? I found that understanding how the various characters are related helps greatly with the appreciation of the stories. I received a copy of The Silmarillion on my 16th...

The CDs also feature Christopher Tolkien reading chapt...

I would not say that The Silmarillion gave me a "whole new perspective" of LOTR , but it certainly it gave me a better understanding of many things that were introduced. Or as Voronwë hinted, gave us a closer view of those unexplained vistas. The identity of the High Elves is one thing tha...
