A Boy Scout to earn his Eagle made and posted signs throughout the remains of the camp so visitors know what was located where. This helped. It is a National Historical Site and souvenirs are to be left where they are found. Most of the good ones are long gone but some are still found from time to t...

Topaz Internment Camp

I'm going to post this here since it seems to fit. If not, please move. I just want to share an experience I had recently with images. About 2 weeks ago my wife's uncle died at 82. He lives down in a town called Delta, Utah. During WWII about 15 miles outside of town an internment camp was built to ...

So perhaps that is why Gandalf noticed that the Watcher went after Frodo, the Ring Bearer.

Been awhile, life as always seems so hectic between the wife's health, work, and finishing my advance degree stuff (it seems to go on and on, the work and research). Actually moving beyond the vanishing wargs, I love the descriptions that Tolkien uses in this chapter. A tiny word where at the doors ...

Glad to see this is Green Lit finally. Now comes the decision. To immerse in the speculation or to let it go and just go see the film for what it is, a film (when it comes out) and decide what I like or dislike? Not saying no spoilers but keep it to a minimum. I still think there was something more ...

Interesting. No opinion either way on Neill Blomkamp. One of the worries I am starting to have is that this will be delayed and then rushed to get through production to the screen, thus impacting the overall quality of the project. Will it be unique on its own, or just a prequel of LOTR that is alon...

First Voronwë, cheers to you on being recognized, but many people here and at TORN know your wisdom and insights are both thought provoking and delightful to read. Next, I found this quote "I am not here, however, to provide a blow-by-blow of what happened, but to assure you, as I have, that it...

Well, no matter what, we have the book and we can read that and create our own screen play, our own creatures and characters in the image we view them at. Movies are okay, they are entertainment but for me, there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING like a great book. On another note, one has to question ...

Thanks Voronwë. Things should settle by August . . . knock on wood but nothing as critical as other members are going through. I might be down in the San Jose area soon though.

I still stand by my original thought when the concern was with the TE lawsuit. Despite setbacks there is way too much money involved/to be made and so the film is going to go forward. It's just a question of when and GDT does make it sound like they are reading to go, and go strong once the MGM situ...

Just not for me, and its fine if others like it. I'll pass on the 2011 calendar. It actually brings up a point of thought for me. I wonder why a "App" hasn't been made for a Tolkien Calendar for those who have cell phones or an iTouch where they could be used? Certainly there is money to b...

Wonderful Voronwë! I was there about a week earlier and the Redwoods on the coast and the Sequoia's in the Sierra's always make me think of Tolkien and the ents. Much like star gazing they remind me how insignificant we are in the scheme of time. I hope you and everyone here had a wonderful holidays.

I think it is the reasoning that we have to look at behind what we feel is moral or immoral. For example, I think everyone on here would agree it is immoral to hit spouses and children. Why though? Is it because it hinders social development, ruins families or because it is simply wrong to hurt anot...

There are several models of moral development that are out there. I'll use one to show what I am trying to say that right or wrong are linked to moral development. Using Kohlberg's states of moral development I would argue that right or wrong does depend on one's moral development. In the pre-conven...

For me, there are two notions that I try to live by that come from Stephen Covey. One is to begin with the end in mind and the other is seek first to understand, then be understood. I cannot influence a person, I cannot really do anything with anyone until that individual feels that I have empathy f...

Letter 281 From a letter to Rayner Unwin 15 December 1965

Finally I can get this posted! I would like to do 1 or 2 a month and focus somewhat on The Hobbit for my posts as I have never really studied that in depth. Taken from my birth year (I was 5 days short of 8 months) I read this letter which is concerning preparations for a British paperback of The Ho...
