White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about the image on the Air Force One, Wednesday and had the following to say: "I have not seen the cartoon, but I don't think it's altogether newsworthy that I don't spend a lot of time reading the New York Post."

That pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter. Although I agree with those who have stated that Obama would be wise to ignore this, and rise above it.

Jonathan Strange isn't fantasy either. :nana: It IS invented history (and that's probably where you will find the quote from me).

What "fantasy" do you think that I like, Al (other than Tolkien, which isn't really fantasy) And I never said that it was "invented history" either. :) LOTR can probably best be described as an epic romance, and the full legendarium as myth. But this is a discussion tht is probab...

Ah, Varda, it sounds like you will fit in here nicely! Particularly since your opinions seem to match my own so closely. I also love the movies (despite being very aware of their many faults), and I also am not particulary a fan of "fantasy". In fact there are some here who tease me for sa...

I largely agree, C_G, and I think that Obama largely agrees too, which is part of why he was so intent on closing it as soon as possible. It is a ridiculous legal fiction. And I agree with Lord M that they have no basis to hold them, and and I will be disappointed if they are not released fairly soon.

The dilemna, Lord M, is that they are not in the U.S., and haven't been, so it's not question of allowing them to stay in the U.S, it's a question of allowing them to enter the U.S.

Meanwhile, a decision today by the D.C. Circuit Court of the U.S. Court of Appeals has set up an interesting test case for the Obama administration. Among the most bizarre of the detainees at Gitmo are a group of 16 Uighurs, Chinese Muslims who seek independence from the majority Han Chinese, or at ...

As for the state secrets case, that was one case in which a determination was made that the state secrets privilege really did apply. As the government spokesman said in the article that you quoted, too much should not be read into one case. Talk me again in a year or two if it appears that the Oba...

So what distant memory is it that Strider is recalling? We don't know, do we? And that is as it should be. One thing that I didn't pick up for a long time is the true significance of the scene where Aragorn tells Sam that if he wanted to he could take the Ring. This really is his moment of temptatio...

I agree completely, Ax. But the statement "the more things change, the more they stay the same" just isn't accurate (or fair).

The more things change, the more they stay the same ... ? Or, what am I missing? What you are missing is that that article presents a fairly distorted picture of the situation (and your summary of it, quite frankly, distorts it even further). For instance, the Obama administration has firmly reject...

Tying together the two parts of your post, Frelga, I found it very interesting in that interview that not just Bristol but even her mother seemed to be suggesting that abstinence-only programs are simply unrealistic and don't work. If one result of this sad story is that responsible use of birth con...

Yeah, Lali! I think that Frodo, really wanted to trust Strider, but was afraid to. I think he was really thrown for a loop when it turned out that the "reward" that Strider was asking for was not money, it was that they take him with them. Why would he want that? It didn't fit with anythin...

Book 1, Chapter 10: Strider

Okay, time to move forward. I'm not going to do a long summary of the chapter like I did for the last chapter. Rather, I'm going to invite others to comment on the interesting events of this chapter without preconceptions from me (at least initially). I'm going to particularly encourage some of thos...
