Re: Ontario Has a New Premier: Rob Ford's Younger Brother

My main concerns are his lack of experience and the shady background of his family. When Rob Ford was called out for his drug use (cocaine) while mayor of Toronto, it is quite possible his younger brother was serving as an enabler or supplier of drugs. I am not comfortable with someone who has been ...

Re: Ontario Has a New Premier: Rob Ford's Younger Brother

Although Doug says he is opposed to the legalization of marijuana, the Globe and Mail presented very strong evidence that he was the major distributor for pot in Etobicoke during the 1970's. If you wanted marijuana, Doug was the person you went to. All the druggies used to hang out in the parking lo...

Ontario Has a New Premier: Rob Ford's Younger Brother

Urrrghh.... And he has zero political experience, and has publicly said he is a big fan of Donald Trump. Liberals are referring to him as 'Trump Light'. Under the last Conservative government, many government services were slashed in order to balance the budget. I found myself teaching my nu...

Re: 2018 U.S. Congressional elections

I voted today in Ontario's provincial election. There was a paper ballot which you marked with an x. You put the ballot in a cardboard sleeve so no one could see your choice, then fed the top of the ballot (an 8 1/2 x 11" piece of paper) into a machine on top of the ballot box. It was pretty mu...

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

Wow, that sounds really scary! I have two Fantastic Four comic books from the first year of the series (#13 and #17) and have been secretly wanting to get them signed by Stan. Alas, my online research has turned up some worrisome news about Stan's state of health: https://movieweb.com/stan-lee-healt...

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

Speaking of Marvel, a friend of mine was trying to tell me Stan Lee had died recently, as in the last couple of weeks.

I am not sure what planet I would have to be living on to miss that news, if it had actually happened!

Re: Ireland looks set to repeal the 8th Amendment

Few issues are more charged than abortion, so I understand your reluctance to discuss your views on FB. I have a friend in Michigan whose father is a retired surgeon. When Roe vs. Wade was passed, he gave a sigh of relief and said, "Good, now I won't have to repair the liquefied insides of wome...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

Given the amount of work that obviously went into that quilt, $159 seems a very reasonable price! Handmade quilts at local fairs in my area sell for hundreds of dollars. I love the quilt one of my aunts made for me as a wedding gift, and I only have the one queen-sized bed, so I really didn't need t...

Maria, I am curious to know how much you paid for it, given what I posted above!
And yes, hand-crocheted bedspreads ARE very heavy!

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

My birth mom hand-crocheted a queen sized bedspread. I didn't want to keep it because it was white, and very heavy, therefore difficult to keep clean. And I have a black cat who likes to sleep on my bed. I also have a queen sized handmade quilt that was a wedding gift from one of my aunts. When I ha...

Re: House Chaplain Patrick Conroy doesn't resign

Conway rescinded his resignation in a scathing letter, telling Ryan that he'd have to fire him for cause. Ryan decided it wasn't worth it. https://static01.nyt.com/files/2018/us/politics/20180304-chaplain-letter.pdf http://time.com/5265197/house-chaplain-patrick-conroy-rescinds-resignation-paul-ryan/

Re: The Russia Investigations and (un)related scandals

I wonder about Ryan’s “faith.” His utter contempt for anyone who was so stupid as to have been born into poverty is not within my definition of Christianity. Paul Ryan is a fan of Ayn Rand. One of the books Ayn wrote was called "The Virtue of Selfishness". I cannot think of any...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I really don't think a split is necessary. This forum doesn't get all that much traffic. My post in this thread re. Black Panther on April 13th was the last post made in this forum for 16 DAYS!

I'm happy to leave things the way they are. People can just skip posts that don't interest them.

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Finally got to see Black Panther! Things I loved about it: T'Challa's snarky, scary smart sister. Her flipping him off near the start of the movie made me fall in love with her instantly! Andy Serkis does a great job as the bad guy. He and Martin Freeman were both excellent as the Tolkien white guys...

Terrible tragedy in Canada:
The number of dead is likely to increase by at least one. One of the players is on life support, and his family has volunteered to donate his organs.
