Mostly the usual: not much. The units are supposed to be divided between "social housiing" and for-profit, but there's not enough money and the city is interfering over zoning, etc. The Olympic village was in a very prime part of the city and it seems as though it's too good for poor people.

I can't think of any country where money won't buy you extras, whether it's health care or private schooling. We have plenty of private schools in Canada and the poshest of them do exactly what they do elsewhere: educate the ruling class. :D Public housing is a whole different thing. We have public ...

I don't understand your objection, nerdanel. Do you think some people should have better bridges or highways? In Canada everyone is covered. Some provinces require premiums and some don't. I don't think prescriptions or glasses or dentists are covered here but they are in England. Everyone is covere...

I would not be particularly surprised to learn that "Taliban" or "al Quaeda" money went to the making of that movie. Not saying it did, but wouldn't be surprised. The guy who made it is weird, just plain weird. I cannot fathom what his motives REALLY were, or if he knows himself....

Holby, you insult animals. I doubt wolf packs attack each other because one wolf said something about a wolf long dead. Pretty much, Frelga. The one difference between men and wolves is that men can reason and wolves don't. No wolves ever built a mosque or a hospital. Men do. Have wolves had wars? ...

Not the 21st century man, just "the man". We ARE the animal kingdom, we are one animal among others. Different in some ways but not in all. We over here tend to think we are the correct or moral or ethical or proper sort of person. We may be. But that isn't a truth universally acknowledged...

Holbytla, they are more the norm than we are. I think that's what westerners don't understand. "Instinct" is what they are operating on, as much as anything. Most of the rioters will not have seen the movie. They will perhaps have some vague idea of it and no more. While it may not be usef...

I agree with those observers who state that the attack in Libya was preplanned and meant to mark the anniversary of 9/11. One of my reasons for thinking so is the fact that the Canadian government, that week, took the extreme action of closing our Iranian embassy and chucking Iranian diplomats out o...

I, along with most people, would like to see jobs. But what I would like to know is: what jobs? Where? Doing what? It's easy to stand around shouting about it, but for the life of me I can see no way to "provide" jobs for all the people who need them. Mr. Romney is rich, but he is not an e...

There are those who believe very strongly that opening it up would mean the death knell of the Olympics as they exist now. That wouldn't break my heart, but the Olympics are important to a lot of people. Gold medals are still seen as some sort of validation or proof that "our way" is bette...

While Canada won "only" 1 gold medal in this past Olympics, Canadian athletes won a lot of gold medals in 2010's winter games, more than any other nation. We're a winter country, I guess.

Oh, that good ol' Olympic spirit!

The breastbeating in Canada has already begun. "We" didn't get enough medals!

Well, no, I sure didn't. Good for the kids who did.

I enjoyed parts of the games, but my original feelings haven't changed.

It doesn't do any good to throw up your hands and say "It's no use!" Then the only people who get involved are on the extremes. I find American politics to be very . . . . poisonous. Canadian politics are not as bad. Not yet. Although each election cycle here we see more and more of these ...

I also think his tongue is often planted in his cheek. Let him enjoy his moment of glory. He's a Jamaican. What would his life be without running? He's done a lot of things for his home town and country, none of which he is obliged to do. The 1500 has been called the metric mile ever since I can rem...
