Re: Why Church?

 I have never gone to a Maundy Thursday service. I will put this on my must-do list for next year.

(I did attend the Good Friday service, which was poignant in its starkness.)

Good to know! I will keep it on my list of possibilities then.

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Was it scary? It looks intriguing, but I don't like horror movies.

Has anyone seen The Darkest Hour? My friend wants to see it, and I'm just wondering if it's good.

The Disaster Artist looked kind of interesting.

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber

The funny thing is barely anyone even answered the question Alatar answered. Did anyone actually say if they thought the guy should or shouldn't be fired? Yes, I did here: To give an opinion [on] your original question, I would say that it depends. Is this the first time he has said things like thi...

Re: Beyond the bounds of Earth

That's exactly what I was thinking! We are part of the heart of the universe, which is part of a giant being—God, perhaps? (And God could be defined in so many ways.)

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Pearly, that sounds lovely! :)

And I'm a fan of Sufjan (thanks to yovi), so I'll have to listen to those songs. Can't wait!

Re: Beyond the bounds of Earth

Wow. Just wow!

(And, looking at Impy's post above, I'm struck anew with the thought that all of that looks like a heart. )

Re: Stranger Things

I caught some of an episode of the second season. As usual, the writing is excellent. I'm just being a wuss about the scary stuff and the gore. I don't like being scared.

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber

Funny. This is pretty much the exact thing I'm reading about right now in Brene Brown's latest book Braving the Wilderness . I was thinking (over my lunch break, while reading it) that it would be beneficial to do it as a book study on this messageboard. It is about the echo chamber, how we stick wi...

Re: Cultural Appropriation

I guess, for me, it's only a big deal if it's done disrespectfully or it's done in such a way that other people are profiting from it. A good example might be my hometown baseball team, the Cleveland Indians with our Chief Wahoo. Ehhhh, I mean, when I was growing up I didn't think anything of it, bu...

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber

I got it too. And you guys know me. Over 10 years, most of you. Yet, despite that, and despite having a pretty good idea of the content of my character, nobody was willing to even try to reach common ground. Instead, the past 4 pages have been attempting to show me the error of my ways and my presum...

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber

I deliberately picked this one for that reason. Yes, it was an appalling thing to say. The question is whether it should be a career ending mistake? He profusely and unequivocally apologised, and is undoubtedly a product of his generation, but even so it was a terrible thing to say. But should it b...

Re: Nature Pics

Very pretty! The purple asters are a favorite of mine, especially paired with goldenrod. (And even prettier if there's blackberry in the mix in the fall!)

I am not in an emotional place where I can watch it right now. I'm sure it's great, and I'll probably watch it someday soon, just not now.

Re: IMDB Top 250 films

Hmmm. So did the movie not hold up or did you change? Probably more the latter. It's not the first time that something that seemed inspiring and beautiful in my 20s now feels corny in my late-30s. A particularly glaring one in Shawshank for me is a quote like this: "Remember Red, hop...
