Re: How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

As Tolkien stated in Letter 160 to Rayner Unwin: "I am not now at all sure that the tendency to treat the whole thing as a kind of vast game is really good – cert. not for me, who find that kind of thing only too fatally attractive." You have, unfortunately, taken a few quotes from Tolkie...

Re: How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

I am more sympathetic to your point of view than you perhaps think, my dear Tolkien RJJ. I agree that Tolkien saw himself more of a discoverer than an inventor and I very much believe that is large reason why his writings are so compelling, and the quotes that you cite from his letters are definite...

Re: How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

On the contradiction between the elves and dwarves of course without the text I cant say anything for sure but I was just reading a at the council of Elrond Gandalf says "If all the grievances that stand between elves and dwarves are to be brought up here, we may as well abandon the council.&qu...

Re: How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

The 1960 rewrite of The Hobbit is published - as far as it went before it was abandoned - in John Rateliff's The History of The Hobbit , which I strongly urge reading if you are interested in The Hobbit's place in Tolkien's legendarium. However, he did not get far enough to address the issues that ...

Re: How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

I've always thought of "The Hobbit" as being reflective of Bilbo's lack of sophistication. He wrote his account from his perspective as a parochial hobbit with a grandiose self importance as THE Baggins of Bag End. Thus, he sees the Dwarves as bumbling and arrogant, while he's the only on...

Re: How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

You should be wary of looking to The Hobbit for examples of the nature of "Gandalf the Grey". When The Hobbit was written, there were no Istari, there was not even a formal concept of the Maiar, though there was a concept of other being of the same nature of the Valar. It is unclear that ...

Re: Was Gandalf a Valar?

Middle Earth Conspiracy Theory Gandalf was Manwë I still need to read The Peoples of Middle-Earth before i make a conclusion. But i thought of a conspiracy theory. What if Gandalf was indeed Manwë. Manwë asked Olórin to go and Olórin was scarred and Manwë said it was the more reason he should go. Bu...

How Powerful was Gandalf the Grey?

When I think of Gandalf I think of both Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White. But really Gandalf the Grey died, and was given extra power and wisdom by Eru and remade into a new far more powerful Gandalf, Gandalf the White. So thinking of just Gandalf the Grey here [Manwë conspiracy theories aside...

Was Gandalf a Valar?

I believe a mistake was made by Christopher Tolkien. I always thought Gandalf a maiar from reading the sillmarillion as Olórin was a Maiar. However, of course , our sillmarillion was not published by J.R.R Tolkien but Christopher and I believe Tolkien left us with the idea of two separate olorins in...

Re: War of the Ring Grand Strategy LOTR Board Game

That is what I love about the game. It can go 100 directions each time and you can win or lose 1,000 different ways. I have warriors of ME but i dont yet have the lords of middle earth. Its hard to find at a good price but I will eventually, love me some Galadriel.

The Power of Galadriel in the Third age- That of a Maiar?

The question is not of her power in the first age vs the created power of a maiar, but of her power vs general maiar in the third age. I have argued that the Maiar are overrated in their power and I also argue the strength of the Noldor [individually not collective] increased from the first age to t...

Hyperbole Within the Sillmarillion “What we have in the sillmarillion are traditions....handed on by men in numonor and later in middle-earth.... blended and confused with their own mannish myths and cosmic ideas.” -J.R.R Tolkien Myths Transformed “Pure myth and legend....cosmological myth ” -Lette...

What is the Chance of the Valar Fighting for the Free People

“Long years in Arda [Melkor] held dominion over most of the lands of earth.” -Valaquenta If Sauron had the upper hand and was winning the war of the ring would the valar send help? Or, even, why did the valar not destroy Sauron in the third age the first place? I think there are a few reasons. In t...

Sauron or Melkor who was the Greater Force for Evil?

This is not a question of who was more powerful at creation, but who did more evil to the free peoples. I will argue that Sauron was the most powerful force for darkness in all of Middle-earth. And that his power was greater than Melkor's for much of history and he accomplished more than did morgoth...
