Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance

If I get time I might address this stuff in more depth, but I want to quickly address a number of false equivalences I'm seeing lately. Some here, some on FB, some from other sources. Lee is not Washington. He's also not Hitler. Not even close on either of those. Remembering is different from honori...

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance

My father punched Nazis.
With artillery shells.

True story.

I really am trying to get back on topic.

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance

Exactly, Frelga. This is America. We should honor the soldiers who fought for America, not against it.

And we should also punch Nazis. Cuz Captain America said so.

Just trying to get back on topic.

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance

I'm an American. I swore an oath to the Constitution. My perspective is based on that. If your perspective differs, that's your right. I can only present my own. And yeah, history is written by the winners. So there's that. Which is part of why I call the monuments "participation trophies"...

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance

I wrote this a while back on Facebook regarding the Confederate flag, but it pertains to Civil War monuments participation trophies as well. *snip* Heritage, Pride and Treason Symbols are funny things. There's a lot of talk right now about the meaning of a certain symbol but in truth, symbols have n...

Inception

This smart, imaginative and clever thriller is like "The Matrix" meets "The Sting." The less you know about this film going in the more you'll enjoy it, so I won't say anything else except "Go see it!" And if anyone who has seen it wants to discuss it please use spoiler...

I tend to agree with ax that a great songwriter is one whose work can also be used by other great singers. Which is why I can't let John Hiatt go unmentioned in this thread. I'm sure a lot of you haven't heard his name, but his songs have been covered by (among others) Bob Dylan, Willy DeVille, Lind...

My wife and I discussed this same topic after seeing the Watchmen film. The visual style of the film mimics comic books and she just couldn't get into it. It's just too visual for her. After talking about it we concluded that when she reads she visualizes the story in her head and I don't. So I have...

The real life parallels are pretty obvious (and definitely intentional). Blomkamp is from South Africa, BTW.
As for why the aliens chose there, it's not really addressed in the film, but I assumed at the time that their ship just happened to break down there.

Wilma, If you're planning to see it anyway, don't read this. Just go. But if you're not sure and want me to tell you why you should see it, here's a mostly spoiler free review. I'll talk about the major themes the film deals with, but not the story details. Peter Jackson produced it. The director is...

District 9

I just got back from it and my head is still reeling. This film packs such a punch that I'm gonna have to recuperate before I can post at any length about it. For now I'll just say that I'd be hard pressed to name a better sci-fi film. It's profoundly disturbing in the best possible way. Go see it.

Out of curiosity, what do the bluegrass aficionados here think about the not-just-bluegrass-but-still-all-rootsy O Brother soundtrack? I like it. It's a really good cross section of folk and folk inspired music from this region. And here's my personal favorite Gillian Welch song - Orphan Girl I lov...

To get a little geeky about it, bluegrass is just one type of Appalachian folk music. The O Brother soundtrack covers a fairly wide spectrum of Appalachian folk. The traditional music of this region is largely derived from the music of the Irish and Scottish immigrants who settled here, and I person...

Personally, I really liked Nero as a villain. He's not some genetically engineered supergenius or anything like that. He's a miner . You know, just this everyday working guy who's reeeally pissed off cuz his planet got all blowed up and now he finds himself in a position to do something about it. Ye...

Finally saw it last night. My first reaction was that it's the most awesomest Star Trek movie in the history of ever !!!11 But then I think that that can't be right, except when I try to think of a more awesomer one I can't, so I guess I was right the first time. Personally, I absolutely love time ...

So, okay? Why was it so astonishing that this rather plain Scotchwoman with a frumpy hairdo could actually sing? My dear vison, don't you know that plain looking people aren't supposed to be talented? They're supposed to be intelligent. Talented people are supposed to be attractive, but vapid. That...

Survivor comes back to Thursday nights tonight. I like that show because I like to watch ill-tempered undernourished people run around in their underwear and try to stab each other in the back.

Come to think about it, that's the same reason I watch America's Next Top Model.
