Re: Pride and Prejudice: Adaptations of Austen

I think Keira Knightley, like Kate Winslet, is becoming less self-conscious as she ages, and hence a better actress. She was much better, I thought, in 'Never Let Me Go" - which I think was after P and P, although I'm not sure. I also think Kate Winslet is an example of an actress who when youn...

Re: Letter 181 and Letter 246 Frodo, Sam, Gollum and Other S

I just wonder if Sam might have been able to knock Frodo out; just immobilise him long enough to take the Ring from him. Would he have been able to throw it in himself, though? No person of little power could resist it at the last, "certainly not after long possession, months of increasing torm...

Re: Archetypes

*Waves back at Tosh* Re: my earlier question. It's just that I've seen people refer to ALL Tolkien's characters as archetypes, not just the Valar etc. I suppose they're either misusing the word or they don't happen to identify that closely with any of JRR's characters - or perhaps Tolkien's style of...

Does being an archetype preclude having a soul?

Just a point - I don't think there's really a connection between Merry being the one who follows the Rider in Bree (he just happened to be the one out taking a stroll) and him being the one who finally helped kill the Witch-King (not that anyone has suggested that there is). Merry's hurried return t...

The Shire is 200 miles by 250 miles, isn't it? And with rudimentary transport, it would seem fairly big to them. Sam only knew the land within 20 miles of Hobbiton. Gaffer: "I've never been so far myself; they're rum folk in Buckland" (I think). And provincial prejudices often abound no ma...

Alatar wrote:Ophelia, I think you might be referring to "I will not say the day is done, nor bid the stars farewell". The Lay of Gil-Galad is sung by Sam while still with Aragorn and the other hobbits shortly after Bree and before Weathertop.
Yes, you're right. Whoops!

Another thought: don't forget that there are TWO BBC renditions/performances of the Lay of Gil-Galad, because for some reason the songs of the BBC adaptation on the Music Only cassette/CD (it was originally released in the days before CD's ;) ) - which was released for sale long before the actual dr...

It certainly is not from the musical. It is by a group called Anois. But I do still rather like it. And I love their version of "I Sit Beside The Fire And Think." I'm sure the Tolkien Ensemble have covered the Gil-Galad song too (it wasn't one of my favourites of theirs, as I recall - but ...

Sauronsfinger - I feel equally comforted when I meet someone else who detests the films. ;) I love the stage show, but I loved the original London cast much more. I can't stand "Master of the House" and would never have thought of comparing it with "The Cat And The Moon." And sti...

You can sign a petition asking them to release a DVD of the LOTR Musical here:

Extremely unlikely to work, of course. But still.

Beautiful ending. :( The flashback is so poignant, and so effective - don't think any dramatisation to date has ever put a flashback there. Emotion very well portrayed. My favourite bit of your dramatisation, along with the falling asleep in C.U. bit.

How about "Star of Eärendil," when most of the Ensemble are singing? And also the part of the Journey Song which is sung at the end (short but sweet, admittedly). Also, quite a lot of voices sing the "Nazgûl" and "Ranger" lines during "Flight to the Ford."

Well, I don't know about competing with long-running shows like Les Mis (20 years, is it? ;) ), but LOTR is doing pretty nicely, whatever the critics choose to throw at it. And lots of schools would love to perform it, I'm sure. I think Kevin Wallace once said something about having the rights to a ...

I'd probably donate at least one of my limbs if doing so meant it could be made into a complete DVD, but I wonder if stage rights preclude the rights to film the staged product. :(
