Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional Elections

Ohio's redistricting commission is nominally bipartisan but actually controlled by Republicans. They've issued their new maps. The maps maintain Republican super-majority control. Why? Because, the Republicans say, they won 13 of the past 16 statewide elections, and that's 81%. This sounds like a f...

Re: Not enough Whisky for this Tango Foxtrot

So so light WTF. Might be more "mildly interesting". Colorado gained a Congressional district. We also passed an anti-gerrymandering amendment to our state constitution, which has caused some frustration in our Dem-controlled statehouse but, as one of the people who voted for the amendment...

So does this law also apply to treatments for tubal pregnancies or placental abruptions? What happens if you miscarry, your partner drives you to the hospital, and your neighbor is a complete jerk and decides your family's tragedy is their financial gain?

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

The police officer who shot and killed Ashli Babbitt during the January 6 insurrection, whose conduct that day was recently upheld a second time in an internal Capitol Police investigation (following an earlier Dept. of Justice investigation that reached the same conclusion), has spoken with NBC Ne...

No. If we had stuck with the May 1 withdrawal, today's events would have happened in April.

And this kind of behavior is why we've had flu outbreaks at work and currently have a COVID outbreak at work. All company personnel get paid sick leave but the temps don't. And even the people with sick leave feel compelled to tough it out because we're Americans and we do that ****. So that's why t...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

River, it's possible that Miller's claim that Trump's withdrawal deal was a "ruse" is based on the notion that Trump could have been talked out of leaving had he won. Sadly, this is believable. Trump isn't known for his attention span and his only guiding principle seems to be "What ...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Well he didn't win re-election so he continued the withdrawal. The claim that it was all a ruse sounds clever until you consider this "ruse" required allowing the Taliban to rebuild itself. We released their leader along with 5000 other prisoners. The deal was these people wouldn't return ...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Just skimmed an article saying many of the Afghanis are going to be settled in Seattle/Tacoma area. Not sure *how* many, but local at least. Not sure there's much of an Afghani community there. And housing is scarce and expensive. But hey, maybe someone will open a restaurant and I'll have a chance...

Afghanistan to Guam would be one helluva shock. Regarding the refugees...I think Vance is (perhaps deliberately) underestimating the melting pot powers of the US. I suspect that after some initial culture shock the refugees will just get swallowed up and their kids will be my kids' classmates in col...

I really want this to become a campaign ad. It probably will, once we make it through redistricting.

My House Rep is Neguse. Boebert's counterweight, if you will. :P

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

There is rapidly growing traction for the idea of bringing the translators and everyone else who's likely to get shot for existing by the Taliban in on immigration parole and then processing their visas. A lot of veteran's groups are leaning hard on this. Congressman Gallego is one of them. He rathe...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Anything less than that was doomed to fail, and thus Donald Trump and Joe Biden were right to pull out. The Biden administration probably could have done a better job of it, but I don't know that for sure. I think no one anticipated how quickly it would fall apart. Friday I listened to an NPR inter...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

My impression is that Congress found Trump's White House to be an unreliable negotiating partner and that's why President Art the Deal never closed anything on infrastructure. Or healthcare. Or a middle-class taxcut. Or anything else he promised within the next couple weeks at any given moment betwe...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

A thought struck me. Should Roe v Wade actually be overturned, what will be the big rallying cry for the religious right? They've already lost the fight when it comes to what people do with their genitals. Does critical race theory (aka grad level social studies) have the staying power or will they ...
