Re: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

I think Sunny, Al's comparing US action in Vietnam to Russian action in Ukraine. It's not a perfect comparison. For one thing the Ukrainians aren't guerillas melting back into the landscape. It's some pretty conventional war happening over there. Uniforms, tanks, civilians caught in the crossfire, t...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

Well he can travel on his diplomatic passport but I'm not sure why he'd still have a valid one of those when his official passport has expired.
And I guess he never got around to renewing his standard blue cover job? How disorganized is this guy anyway?

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

A part of me thinks Trump believed the presidency would be restored to him at any moment and that he was entitled to everything (no matter that such documents don't belong to him personally but to the American people/the institution of the presidency). I don't buy that highly sensitive material jus...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

Yes, that does punch a hole in the theory that Trump could simply use his authority as POTUS to wish a material into being declassified. Under that theory, Biden, as the current POTUS, could wish the classification back into being and that whole defense of Trump's actions crumbles to the dust it cam...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

Yes, well, it's pretty clear that Trump doesn't believe laws actually apply to him in addition to everyone else. It's part of his appeal to his fans, even. They identify with the sentiment and admire that he seems to get away with it. The fact that Trump's power and privilege obviously has some limi...

Not sure he had one. Even if he did, he's still not allowed to keep classified documents in his home.

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

There's speculation brewing that the info was going up for sale. Though let's put that aside for the moment. Trump's just an ordinary citizen now. No security clearance, no title, no Oval Office. An ordinary citizen with a pile of classified material he has no right to have and he's been refusing to...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

Good lord. Is this because asking nicely wasn't working or did they determine there was something rather important/sellable in the stash he ran off with?

Apparently the White House was caught completely off guard by this. Which is actually how it should be.

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

That worries me, actually, because this bill hasn't been enacted and if the measures have any impact at all on inflation the effects won't be seen for months. In other words, if people are actually expecting an overnight improvement, they're going to be disappointed.

I hope Rosie is doing OK. Or is it still the workplace issue? Not to be nosy.
Both, with a soupcon of other nonsense. I should probably post in the Kvetching thread. I've got a couple juicy ones.

Re: Not enough Whisky for this Tango Foxtrot

To lend support to that theory, apparently the plaintiff's attorneys contacted Jones's legal team after receiving the phone contents and Jones's attorneys did not exert any privilege over the material. I haven't been following this anywhere nearly as closely as some, but I'm getting the feeling that...

Re: Sad, Sad Day for Star Trek Fans

I'm not even a fan and I'm shook up that Uhura's dead. I watched the movies as a kid and was too young to fully grasp the big deal of her being a Black woman in that role. I just liked her because she was a woman, she was obviously doing something important, and she was just...cool.

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

The more you think about it, the more confusing it gets. The GOP in the Senate is having a snit because a rather conservative Democrat came to agreement with his own party on passing a piece of legislation the Democrats were planning to move without GOP support. They're complaining they were played ...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

I am a lot younger than Biden and you could hear it in my voice for several days when I had COVID. Even after my symptoms had dried up, I didn't quite sound like myself. You'd have to know what I am supposed to sound like to notice, though. Unlike earlier in the infection, when I just sounded like c...

Re: Roe v Wade has been overturned. How do you feel about that?

Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, today said this about the overturning of Roe v. Wade : "Why is it that the women with the least likelihood of getting pregnant are the ones most worried about having abortions? Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb." Stay...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

The jury has convicted Bannon on both charges. They deliberated about 3 hours. Really, that was too long. They had to select a fore-person and have lunch. Or so I've heard. I was wondering if there wasn't some mundane procedural stuff, plus chit-chat, ice-breakers, and making sure everyone understa...

Not sure it's criminal for Trump to make the ask or to be a bully. I don't think it's possible for Vos to grant the request, though.
