Re: US Supreme Court Discussions

In the short term, no. But Alito and Thomas are men in their 70's and therefore at risk of some sort of catastrophic cardiovascular failure.

I'm sure if one of them wants to go under oath with the committee again to correct the record, they will not be refused. And who knows, maybe one of them already told it to the documentarian everyone forgot was there.

Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

I wonder whether the Democrats switching to Republican are doing so in order to vote against Trump-supported candidates in the Republican primaries. Cheney is openly appealing by mail to Democrats in Wyoming to switch parties and vote for her in that primary. I believe it was 37,000 Democrats who v...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

So you are willing to make bold claims without providing supporting data. Noted. I'm happy to withdraw the comment, and I actually question whether I should be discussing this at all since I have no citations to back up my claims. Obviously, it isn't my call to make, but I think that would be the m...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

So you are willing to make bold claims without providing supporting data. Noted. I suspect Canada being a better partner in general, and a destination for asylum seekers in its own right, has something to do with the (relative) lack of people and contraband crossing in from that direction. In some p...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

His lawyer probably told him to do that for fear of what might be discovered in someone else's texts or on social media. Taking the Fifth in general shouldn't be interpreted as anything more than that but, in this context, with those questions...that's not a good look. I mean, it was maybe that or p...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

So which nations are emptying out into Mexico? And why would someone with the means to cross an ocean come to the Mexican border when the Canadian one is longer and even easier to cross? Back up your claims with some names and numbers because >110 million is A LOT. 1.1x10^8 in scientific notation. 1...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

For reference, one third of the US population is ~110 million. The entire estimated population of Central America is ~184 million , the bulk of which (~129 million) are in Mexico. If you exclude Mexico that leaves ~55 million people. Is your unspecified source that you appear to take seriously truly...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Are you conflating people entering illegally with asylum seekers? Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right, not a crime. You report to a border officer and tell them you're seeking asylum and a process starts. Part of the process is investigating the claim, but while you're in the process you sta...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

I wonder how much of that is in the video footage. Is Trump attacking his security detail on tape? Narcissist tantrums can be pretty spectacular but at least the one I worked with in grad school didn't get physical. Just loud. I also wonder who made the threat that caused them to enhance security fo...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

So I think a certain segment of the religious right is on notice now: Vatican Says 'Pro Life' Activists Must Fight For Gun Control . The Vatican hailed the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, but said it is imperative that people who identify as “pro-life” also fight for critical li...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

We no longer have orphanages. Well, we sorta do . Right now there's actually a backlog of parents who want to adopt. If and when that backlog fills up, though... Adoption comes with its own thorny ethical issues and emotional scars. I used to know a woman who had a teen pregnancy back in the 70's a...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

The cheering of the verbal misfire kinda says something about that crowd. Unless it wasn't actually a misfire, she's just saying it is because another, bigger crowd, is most emphatically NOT cheering. Former Trump White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is running for the governorship of ...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

The pro-choice position post point-of-viability is to keep the government out of family tragedies. We live in a pluralistic society. The US has no state-sponsored religion and is not a religion-sponsored state. Not everyone follows the same religious doctrine and not every religious doctrine takes t...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

The line between a miscarriage and an abortion isn't clear because it isn't there. The technical term for a miscarriage is "spontaneous abortion". I think the current statistic for spontaneous abortion is 1/5 or 1/6 (in known pregnancies; no one has any idea how often an egg gets fertilize...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

Louisiana has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the US. It also has a high rate of infant mortality. I wonder if these issues will get attention now that they've gotten abortion out of their system. We'll see if babies ever were the priority here.
